In retrospect I can almost understand why he might have had some appeal. The team had little success with "intellectual" coaches and old school disciplinarians. for many years. I can see how a big personality, who is well known, seems like he's shooting from the hip, uncensored---wait, that's starting to sound familiar. You get the drift. But I must say, I was very happy to see so many of them abandon ship, when he showed the depths of his suckatude---coupled with his doubling down on stupidity, and hiring his disaster of a twin brother. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. Well you can, but who would believe it? I admit I liked the Rex hire. My friends with who are Jet fans said I'd hate him soon. I complained a lot the first year and hated him after the first year. I thought it was possible he learned some lessons but that was wishful thinking. He sucked.

Now, on to the bolded portion of your fine post. I believe there are many things we can think of, that Rex is better at than coaching the Bills--and the Jets. I mean, he probably does 20-25 things, in the course of a day, that would fit the "better at/than" bill. IMO, he came to the Bills as the worst HC in the NFL. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. Well you can, but who would believe it? I took a lot of heat for hating it from day 1. I said I thought Marrone to Rex was a downgrade and that was not a popular opinion. I'm so glad he is gone. I can't stand him as a football coach. There have been other Bills coaches I have thought are no good but Rex is the only one I have really passionately disliked.
Coach Tuesday Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 I was wrong about the Rex hire. I liked it for two reasons: (i) I thought he'd continue to pressure other teams' QBs with exotic pressure packages, making full use of our defensive personnel; and (ii) I thought he'd give the team confidence and credibility that would help bring in quality FAs and a playoff mindset. I didn't realize he'd lost his fastball and wasn't interested in putting in the work it takes to be a successful coach. He literally didn't try - it's so ironic that he's calling out Dareus for stealing money. That's exactly what Rex did here.

TheFunPolice Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 With all of the coaches who will probably be fired plus the yearly surprise, I wonder if Rex gets another shot somewhere...

TheFunPolice Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 I wouldn't rule Rex out in terms of getting another gig in a couple months... The Browns could be the place. With a lot of jobs open, including Indy if they finally get a clue, the Browns job is not going to appeal to the top candidates, and Rex might be able to land it.

He can collect Pegula bucks for another year, so I'll bet he stays at ESPN until then. Not to mention his rep took a serious hit.

I mean, somehow Mike Mularkey got a 3rd HC gig, although they have done OK recently. Before that though I would hardly say his reputation was sterling. Ditto with John Fox. I wouldn't necessarily bet on him getting a HC gig, but a team like the Browns who could use some excitement might bring him in based on his name value and the fact that the top tier guys aren't going to take that job.

Rex and the Browns?
TheFunPolice Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 I think Rob's comment on former Bills coaches tearing it up next year reveals that tubby and tubbier are planning another reunion somewhere to redeem the Ryan name. Where better than with the Browns, where the expectations are practically zero and they have 71 draft picks, with 7 in each round?

I'd be surprised if they give him another shot.
GunnerBill Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 Mularkey kept getting shots by taking lower down positions on staffs and then being a good company man. He got the Jags job on the back if his work with a young Matt Ryan and then the Titans job by being there right place right time. I think Rex would want one more shot.... but his best chance if getting it IMO is to take a DC gig somewhere for a year and produce a top defense. Then the narrative would be "hey, 8-8 and 7-8 in Buffalo he was a bit unlucky to be fired".

Rob Ryan is just starting a stint as a SKY Sports analyst over here in the UK for a month. His debut last night was typically bombastic. Next week SKY are holding a vote for the main televised game in the early slot..... Saints @ Bills was 2nd in the voting as of last night behind Green Bay @ Bears. The link to vote is here...... http://www.skysports.com/nfl/news/12119/11107200/vote-nfl-uk-fans-pick-sky-sports-week-10-game-choices Vote for the Bills game TBD..... because I will be intrigued to hear the fat man's take on how Sean McDermott has got the defense playing better than the brothers grim ever managed. The Bills won the vote and for the 3rd week in a row will be shown live on Sky Sports over here. That is a positive for me because the GamePass Europe service this year has been atrocious and I have missed bits of the Cincy and Tampa games. Let's goooooo Buffaloooooo. I will report back on any interesting Rob Ryan comments.
