Poeticlaw Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 I have been thinking about this for two years and more so since Flowers was a bust, Leaf was a bust and many other first round busts. Proposed idea is as follows: Any college player drafted in the first round will receive a minim 1 year 1 mil mininum salary with incetives. Then at the beginning of the 2nd year their exclusive rights belong to the team who drafted them if the team feels they are worth a long term deal based on their actual experience with the player instead of the players projected potential based on college performance then can sign them to a lucrative deal, if the team does not feel they are worth the money the player becomes an UFA allowing any team in the league to sign the player to an offer that bith the player and them agree on. What this accomplishes is not over paying for busts and having to release our quality veterans just to afford these busts. Let me know what you think im all ears or should i say eyes.
Puhonix Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 Never work. $$$ Makes the world go round, and no player, or agent would ever allow this to happen, and lets not even start to bring the NFLPA into this.

These first round bust picks are bring down the veterans salaries. If teams arent wasting valuable cap space on wasted busts than they would be capable of paying the veteran player the money they are rightfully due.

There's no way any agent (the real masters of the salary structure in the NFL) are going to allow a rookie salary. That would also mean that #1 overall would get as much as #32 overall. Last year alot of people were hesitating to draft players because of which agent they had selected. Lets blame Drew for this one.

I just feel based on worth its not fair to a Veteran good/great player to have to be released take less money else where because the teams first round picks a bust and its eating up the salary cap. However, i did say that their would be incentives included in the 1 year deal maybe even pyramiding down the round 1 minimum so it still appears the higher drafted players are getting paid more that year, but their true deal is in the 2nd year thats when they would sign a blockbuster deal so they woould still get paid but after a years tryoout per say. OTher rookies might like this becuase if these first rounders turn to bust it opens a roster spot tryout.

But we live in a world where Lawyer salaries are 4 and 5 times more than teacher salaries. Its not fair, and its not going to be turned fair. The system as it is isnt going to change. Sucks, but then again, that's life. The incentive idea is great, but it screw top draftees like JP or Rivers, cause they sit for a year, and get no chance to get their incentives, and QB is a position that can cash in.
