Bills better off surrounding Taylor than replacing him?

All season, the thought process for acquiring draft picks was to be ready to find our next Jim Kelly in the 2018 draft.

Now? I'm not so sure.

This franchise is laser focused on creating a "team" rather than acquiring talent. Sure, we all want a stud QB. But the first half of this season proves what many of us thought after last year....2016 wasn't Taylor's fault.

Last season, the Bills finished 10th in points scored amongst the entire NFL. Mind you, 12 teams made the playoffs. TT also has scored 20 or more points in Buffalo's last 13 home games, a team record (including the Jim Kelly Era.)

Taylor also had the 5th least amount of interceptions thrown last season by QB's with over 300 attempts. Through seven games in 2017 he has the 3rd least amount of INT's for QB's with over 150 attempts, behind Alex Smith and Tom Brady. Both of those guys are pretty good.

In otherwords, Taylor led offenses can score and not make costly mistakes.

All this, with a "who is that" core of WRs. Not only this year's crop of No Names, but years past with Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins who have proven themselves to be nothing worth writing home about.

Playing with Jared Goff (last year's number one overall pick) Woods has 381 yards through 7 games, similar to his 613 yards in 13 games last season with Buffalo. Watkins only has 264 yards in 7 games, trailing last years total of 430 yards in 8 games.

Mind you, Watkin's sole 1000 yard season was with Taylor behind center.

Taylor is not the problem. The solution, however, is Coach McDermott's stifling defense and "all-in" mentality that has taken over everyone including the janitor at One Bills Drive.

This year, TT is on track for 17 TD's and 5 INT's. That's after averaging 18 TD's and 6 INT's through his first two years as Bills starter. He didn't pop into a phone booth this past August and fly out with a "Super T" on his chest. This is the same guy.

The same guy who makes minimal mistakes with his mindboggling escapability in the pocket. Taylor avoids sure-fire sacks with joy-stick like footwork. (I will admit some of those escapes I compare him to Superman).

Then you add in Buffalo's new regime and talent evaluators. Tredavious White at pick 27 is pretty phenomenal. Dion Dawkins in the 2nd has already started and held his own. Matt Milano in the 5th? 'nuff said.

Heck, we even had fans calling for 5th round draft pick Nathan Peterman to replace TT after a great pre-season.

Last, but not least, is the chemistry that Coach McDermott has created with this team. While adding talent to any roster is important; chemistry, attitude, and "buying in" is more important than talent. Just ask Watkins, Darby, and Dareus.

The Bills have shown that this Bills "Team" can win with Tyrod. Using the multitude of draft choices to surround TT and add to our defense rather than trading a slew of picks and trading up to bring in a "big arm" for the sake of hoping we find our next Jim Kelly looks to be the right answer.

...and I don't think there is a man on the 63 who would disagree.

I think what Eagles did last year is a perfect example of how you build a team ,

My concern with Benjamin...

Per NFL #NextGenStats, Tyrod has thrown into tight coverage at 4th lowest rate (13.3%). Kelvin tied for second-worst avg. separation (2yds)

4:34 PM - 31 Oct 2017

Benjamin is a guy who makes catches by out-battling the corner hanging all over him. But Taylor is a guy who won't throw the ball unless the receiver is WIDE open.

Is Taylor willing to change? Or will he continue being indecisive?

It's a legitimate concern. If TT wants to take his game to the next level, he has take a few more chances. Let somebody make a play. The concern cant always be....I dont want to turn the ball over. Yes an int can happen so can a guy like KB go up and make a play. So can a PI penalty.

Tyrod Taylor 2017

Wk Opp A/C YDS TD

1 NYJ 16/28 224 2

2 Caro 17/25 125 0

3 Denv 20/26 213 2

4 Atl 12/20 182 1

5 Cinc 20/37 166 1

6 Bye

7 TBay 20/33 268 1

8 Oak 20/27 165 1

Are the Bills winning these games because of Taylors QB skills or are they winning because of their DEFENSE? Be honest here...

Truth hurts

Teams with 300+ yard passers only lose if they don't have a defense imo...I don't think we would have to worry about that with McD

Right on man

This argument is just silly. It's revisionist at best and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And it doesn't explain why TT is leagues lower than the average attempts per game.

Not all that surprised you can't make sense of it. Like I said, I'm glad I've learned that spending significant time arguing legitimate points with you is pointless 0:)

We are the best team in the league with leads?

I haven't seen that.

I didn't see him say that. Did you?

He misstated at least one thing: McDermott only likes to pass a lot when we're trailing. We've only trailed 35% of the entire season. Majority of Taylor's completions, yards and TDs came in that 35% of the season. And Taylor has the 6th best passer rating in the NFL when trailing.

A lot of opinions being 'thrown' around about throwing for 300 yds a game. QBs who did that last year were 56-60-2 in those games. Lots of different aspects to a team game and lots of ways to win.(scoring more points than the other team is the only guaranteed way).

Are we? I don't know. I don't recall saying that. I bet we are close though since you bring it up. Our defense is one of the best in the league in turnovers and points against.

i guess seeing as we were super low in attempts per game in the Rex era too, it being because our defense is good is another argument that doesn't hold any water for me.

I think my point was obvious.

For the record, I understand your argument, I just think it's over simplistic, revisionist and just not satisfactory.

With Taylor looks like $21M cap space in 2018 + yearly raise . I would guess that includes roll over from 2017 , not sure.
List of Bills free agents in 2018 + sign rookie pool

I read an article from August so it has to be outdated

Looking at 2018, Spotrac puts the Bills at $25 million in available cap space based on a projected $168 million salary cap (which is probably a bit low). If the presumed $5 million roll-over is added in, that gives the Bills $30 million or so in available 2018 cap space.

@christrapasso

Assuming $178M cap in '18, #Bills currently set to have around $39M in cap space & around $50M with extra '17 money carrying over.

#Bills have 10 picks in the '18 draft. 2 picks in RD1, RD2, RD3, and possibly RD5. If not extra in RD5, 1 in RD6). One pick in RD4 & RD7.

that was before the KB trade. We now have EIGHT picks. Only one in the 3rd and none in the 7th.

Teams are averaging 34.3 pass attempts per game this season.

The Bills are averaging 28 pass attempts per game. Only the Bears average less at 27.8 pass attempts.

You're overstating the defensive background thing.

Last season NFL teams averaged 35.7 pass attempts per game.

Taylor and the Bills averaged an NFL-low 29.6 pass attempts.

Dennison's offense averaged 35.6 pass attempts per game - 17th in the NFL.

It's not a coincidence that every system Taylor plays in is at or very near the bottom of the league in throwing the football.

C'mon, Wayne! I know it's election season but knock off with the politician-worthy self-serving spin. Taylor's only played as a starter in 2 systems, both with the Bills, and both for coaching staffs that want conservative, run-first offenses.

It's a legitimate concern. If TT wants to take his game to the next level, he has take a few more chances. Let somebody make a play. The concern cant always be....I dont want to turn the ball over. Yes an int can happen so can a guy like KB go up and make a play. So can a PI penalty.

I was probably one of the biggest critics of McDermott and Dennison early on. I thought Dennison's offense was going to be a disaster for Tyrod, but he's flourishing in it. He's a significantly better QB against Oakland than he was on opening day, partly because he's being rigorously coached and mentored in the fundamentals, but also because he seems to accept coaching well, something many QBs can't/won't do because of their temperaments. I think if the coaches work with him on throwing into tight coverage, especially to Benjamin, and he comes to trust Benjamin, we'll see him do it.

Like many others, I'm not convinced that McDermott's/Dennison's conservative approach to offense is the best one, but I can't fault their coaching when it comes to getting the most out of whatever talent they have on hand. TT is the best QB the Bills have had since Drew Bledsoe left for Dallas more than a decade ago, and he's a good QB, better than many teams have. No, he's not Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers and he never will be, but that doesn't mean he can't develop into a Joe Flacco or Carson Palmer or Alex Smith.

The Bills would be foolish to dump TT until they are sure that they have somebody better on the roster. A good QB on the roster trumps a great prospect in the draft who might turn out to be the next Aaron Rodgers ... or the next JP Losman or EJ Manuel.

Why do you assume a conservative, run-first offense is what McDermott wants?

It doesn't occur to you that he knows a run-first offense is his only choice right now considering the limitations of the quarterback?

Well we also had a damn good running game and put up a lot of points too. I mean your argument could be correct. Taylor obviously isn't a Brady Brees type.
