yungmack Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Well, Phil Hansen was a high motor, strong fundamental player. I see Lawson as more of an athletic freak. You forgot "blue collar type." "lunch box guy" for Hanson and "gifted with natural talent", "won the DNA lottery" for Lawson.
34-78-83 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 (edited) Why is this still being debated about til death? I wasn't here when we drafted Shaq but I can assure you I never thought we were getting a 10+ sack guy. And I'm ok with that He is an elite edge setter and a force in the run game. A true strong side defensive end who should be one of the best run stuffing ends in the game. He will give you 6-8 sacks a year and always have a high motor He was the 19th pick lol not the 5th. I knew we weren't getting von miller . He is a violent Defensive End, not a pass rush specialist Well put. I'm quite pleased with his production considering he's probably taken 140 snaps or less as a 4-3 strong side end in the pros. Edited October 13, 2017 by 34-78-83
dezertbill Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 He was drafted to fit into Rex's 3-4 man-coverage defense, much like Ragland & Darby. It's on him and his coaches to get him adjusted to this 4-3 zone scheme. He played career as 4-3 end at Clemson and talk during pre-season was him moving back to natural position with hand on the ground under Frazier. https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/draft-pff-scouting-report-shaq-lawson-de-clemson
billsfan89 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 (edited) He is a stout run defender and he is one pace to get 7-8 sacks on the season. That's pretty good for a player in his second year and coming off of a major injury. People don't seem to understand that players develop and progress as their careers go on. Shaq is on a good trajectory. Year 2 he is already playing like and above average player at his position. It stands to reason that as he gets further removed from injury it is possible he will get better. I think Lawson will be a 8-10 sacks per-season guy who powerfully sets the edge and stuffs the run. That's pretty good production for the 19th pick. Edited October 13, 2017 by billsfan89
Scott7975 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 I think the defense misses Shaq more when he is out than Dareus when he is out.
Irv Posted October 13, 2017 Author Posted October 13, 2017 Shaq is very good at the run defense. He's an upgrade from a player like Kelsay. He'll never be a big sack guy but he'll get a few each year. We're getting more out of him then we ever did from Maybin. We got more out of The Elvis dude fan than Maybin.
BringBackOrton Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 You posted a link with Whaley talking about Lawson's pass rushing ability. You did not agree with anything except post a link. Sorry, I thought I said it. Many folks on this board, and cited scouts believed Shaq Lawson had good pass-rushing skills, I did not.
Bills Fan of St Augustine Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 I don't think I'd single out Shaq as a problem on this team. Solid pick with upside.
Nuncha Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 (edited) Shaq is a good player and is essentially a rookie still. He is also battling injury.... Edited October 14, 2017 by Azucho98
H2o Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 He reminds me of Carlos Dunlap. Good Get That is a good comparison my friend
KD in CA Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 Ogbah taken after Shaq has 7.5 career sacks to Shaq's 4. There have been many historical pass rushers taken in the late first/early second who have had more success than Shaq. Wow, really? That IS amazing! And I bet no one taken before 19th has ever had such an embarrassing sack total. Gosh, thanks for shining a light on this underreport issue!
Koko78 Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 My greatest fear realized, I've become Americanized. It's alright, buddy - embrace the apple pie, V-8 motors with crappy gas mileage, and county fairs. Just as long as you don't start saying "y'all", "yinz", or "yous guys", you'll be fine.

Gosh, thanks for shining a light on this underreport issue! Maybin was taken before the 19th pick. That doesn't make Shaq good. Oh I'm sorry, you were doing the "hurr durr let me act retarded to prove something retarded" thing. Carry on.
Marty McFly Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 Last night I watched the Panthers DEs with great interest. The unit last year that used their DEs to contain and push the play up the middle to the DTs and LBs beat outside pocket protection to collapse the pocket. Lawson will never be able to do that. As I've said all along he is Chris Kelsey. And that's not a terrible thing, it's good to have but when teams only have to stop Hughes than we are in trouble. Kyle Williams is hurting. He's done. He is still giving more effort than anyone every play (Humber and Alexander are up there). And the other DT spot is not being used properly. We need to slide Lawson in to a tighter 43 to supplement him with Adolphus Washington. Washington is lean and agile enough to move tackles. I gotta agree with some of this. Hes a run stopper for sure but we knew that when we drafted him, he isnt pass rusning at the NFL levelnyet if ever, thats why they have Yarbrough or Lorax rushing the QB on 3rd and pass downs.
Roundybout Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 Maybin was taken before the 19th pick. That doesn't make Shaq good. Oh I'm sorry, you were doing the "hurr durr let me act retarded to prove something retarded" thing. Carry on. Methinks we have struck a nerve with someone.
