Samwell Tarly Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Just a question that's bugged me in recent years. Why are NFL rosters so restricted? Teams basically are allowed no depth and you can't even keep guys in the building to train in your system. Sometimes they have to cut guys they like to make room somewhere else because of injuries. Wouldn't league quality improve as a whole if teams could keep and develop more of their own players? I'd love to have this explained please.
plenzmd1 Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 $$$$$ in owners pockets. It really is just that
cd1 Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 For the sake of Parity and avoid teams being able to stock pile players.
papazoid Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 $$$$$ in owners pockets. It really is just that the NFL salary cap is set at $167 mil what difference does it make if 53 or 63 players on a roster are sharing it. those last 10 guys are making the minimum....so basically offset by one less big contract.

Lurker Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 For the sake of Parity and avoid teams being able to stock pile players. Yep. Same reason there's a salary cap. Rich teams like Dallas could do this, otherwise: http://www.theonion.com/article/fantasy-draft-preparation-ep-1-32

What if there was just a salary cap, with a cash to cap rule, and a hard floor and a team could have 40 players or 60.
Samwell Tarly Posted October 10, 2017 Author Posted October 10, 2017 In not saying unlimited rosters, just 5 to 10 more guys so you're not utterly screwed when injuries happen. They may not be great, but at least they're already trained.

Samwell Tarly Posted October 10, 2017 Author Posted October 10, 2017 Yeah, but maybe not enough ps positions to be truly helpful. Would it kill the NFL to offer a few more?
ChanOverChin Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 But why only allow 46 players to suit up on game day when each team has 53 players at their disposal??
Samwell Tarly Posted October 10, 2017 Author Posted October 10, 2017 (edited) But why only allow 46 players to suit up on game day when each team has 53 players at their disposal?? You have a point. As specialized as position players inthe NFL are, along with the frequency of injury, you'd think they would allow more. Edited October 10, 2017 by Jigsaw2112

If you include the practice squad you essentially just nailed the current system. Part of it, just like limiting who dresses, is to force decisions- which helps create a more dramatic product

Not saying more players definitely helps, but adding nothing like they're basically stuck with is gonna make a pretty boring, predictable, and inneffective offense. CommonCents Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Round it to 60 Then you would have a problem like the NBA does. The NFL has it right, the 46 guys dressed means everyone has a role and you hardly ever see starters sitting unless it's week 17.
boyst Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I'd expand practice teams, the size is just right. Enough to field a backup at every position, special team, etc
Charles Romes Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I thought we would see the rosters expand to 60. With the NFL and football as a whole in decline that will never happen. Not enough money to go around, not enough deserving players.
K D Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Most college teams have 100+ players. Very common for multiple players to wear the same jersey number. I had a friend that was like 6th string for UB and that's a small school
