“My model was Elgin Baylor,” he told The Times in 1992, recalling the forward known for his superb body control when playing with the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers. “My friends and I used to sneak into the old Madison Square Garden to see him play. Before Baylor, basketball was a more stand-up-and-shoot game.”

That was my favorite NBA team ever. So much fun to watch. Far from the best. But Earl Monroe was my favorite player when I was a kid. Monroe. Gus Johnson. Wes Unseld. Kevin Loughery and Jack Marin, the human grape juice stain. The battles against the Knicks and Clyde were awesome.

 

They were. Must have killed you when Earl went to the Knicks.
