Keep it simple. Get rid of the past posts if it makes it easier to manage. There are few posts worth depositing in storage. The longer you keep garbage the more it rots. Clean the slate and deal with the present.

Basically, the thought process behind NOT bringing over 4.5M posts is:

1. Linking structure. Converting old links to new links may be just a rewrite of the URLs but it gets messy.

2. An empty database means the new code should be lightning fast. And fast for a very long time.

We have 4.5 Million posts, but for the most part it is a slow moving chat room. I'm not sure many threads are revisited after a couple weeks have past. If/when I migrate the forum to a contemporary software package - should I just leave the 4.5M posts behind and just transfer the structure and user accounts over?

That would mean every forum would start fresh, but there would be a link to the old archives.

Any opinions?

I cast my ONE vote for exactly as you say. Don't waste too much time on the old stuff. Anyone who wants that, with the archive link you state, should be happy. And I would not waste resources on the archive either.

As long as you can keep the Shout Box. That's my favorite part here as a BBMB refugee.

Giant sig pics and ad materials make some 'modern' message boards slow to load and excruciatingly hard to read.

Search function has vast room for improvement.

Ability to upload attachments from locally hosted files would be nice. (can't do that now?)

yeah, that might not be back for awhile. Someone would have to write an add-on for that. I don't know if/when it would be available.

We have never allowed images in signatures. The text one will probably go too.

People upload stuff all the time.

Can we get rid of all the old posts except the Trade Mario for Skelton thread and the Von Miller thread? My 2 favorites

These suggestions are not practical. I'm not fielding requests to import individual threads.

After seeing years and years of posting flushed away without notice or even a 2nd thought at BBMB, that you would ask your board members the best course to follow when it comes to archives speaks volumes in my humble opinion.

thanks SDS

2 questions:

What about the UFO thread? Shirley that would be preserved right?

If you go ahead and do this will the Bills pick up Simeon Rice?

If there is a cheap way to link to the past and everyone keeps their current credentials that's fine. I am really looking forward to a platform that allows you to go to last page to a post on your mobile without going into full version. I do this move many times a day.
