It is almost ALWAYS better to go for it on 4th and G from the 1. No matter what point in the game it is. Even on the first drive of the game. If you don't make it, the other team has the ball backed up in their end zone. It's not exactly a win/win, but it's damn close.

 

Naturally, kicking the FG would be better depending on score and game situations.

 

In that situation, the field goal was the best option. Your forgetting that the opposition's #1 and #2 wide receivers were out of the game, and the defense was playing extremely well against the pass. Without his #1 and his #2 Ryan is far more limited in the red zone, especially with no time outs. They played it perfectly, odds wise, given the situation.
