26CornerBlitz Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 After Further Review: Why the Bills' stingy defense will look so familiar to the FalconsIn this week's After Further Review, we'll look at the similarities and differences in McDermott's defenses with the Panthers and the Bills, and how he's played the Falcons in recent years. FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Buffalo Bills have the best scoring defense in the NFL. First-year Bills head coach Sean McDermott built one of the league’s best defenses in Carolina, so it’s no surprise that Buffalo is having success. What is a little surprising, however, is that the Bills have had so much defensive success so quickly. In 2016, Buffalo was No. 16 in scoring defense and No. 19 in total defense, allowing an average of 23.3 points and 357 yards per game, respectively. Three games are admittedly a small sample size, but this season the Bills are giving up just 12.3 points per game and 278.3 yards per game, which rank No. 1 and No. 6 in the NFL, respectively. In the seven seasons McDermott was in Charlotte, the Panthers were 5-8 against the Falcons. While the last two meetings in 2016 were lopsided games in Atlanta’s favor (more on that later), that wasn’t always the case. In a six-game span during the 2012 to 2015 seasons the Panthers won five of six matchups, including back-to-back games where Carolina outscored the Falcons 72-3. McDermott’s approach to defense isn’t too far off from what Dan Quinn believes, in that he doesn’t overburden his players with schemes and assignments. He prefers to keep things simpler for the players and allow them to maximize their athleticism.
Magox Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 It's a good informative read on some elements of McD's defense.

Saint Doug Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 The author writes What is a little surprising, however, is that the Bills have had so much defensive success so quickly. I think any of the members on here can easily say why. The author should do his homework before writing.

FLXbillsmafia Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 503!! yards for Matt Ryan against McDermott's defense last year, followed up by an efficient 27/33 277 yards in the 2nd game. Ouch!! This is going to be a huge test. If the Bills can hold them in the mid-20s that would be a great defensive performance. Offense needs to score at least 28-30 to have a shot.

The Carolina D had major problems last season without Norman and Kuechly.
schoolhouserock Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 That was a really good read! Stopping this ATL offense is going to be the Bills' D's biggest challenge to date.

Julio had 300 Yards receiving that day. They had no answer for him.
quinnearlysghost88 Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 is our defense really McDermott's or Frazier's?
corta765 Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 I would say to McD's defense on the Panthers 2016 D's performance that secondary was a tire fire of inexperience. They lost both Norman and Tillman back there and were breaking in a really young group which got better in the 2nd half of the year. Add in the removal of Jared Allen and Kuechly injured up front and he had some real challenges there.
