3rdand12 Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 I am liking the head coaching for the most part. If the Bills are ever going to become a dominant team though - McDermott is going to have to be more aggressive putting teams away early. He is too field goal happy in my opinion. Bills are eventually going to lose to a high powered offense because of it. I want to see him build a truly dominant team that puts games away early and often. 4 games in. He has the best kicker in the league( or best we have had in forever ) We can watch it grow Dave. expect setbacks and look for resiliency
PolishDave Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 (edited) 4 games in. He has the best kicker in the league( or best we have had in forever ) We can watch it grow Dave. expect setbacks and look for resiliency Yeah. He better not be field goal happy on fourth and short against New England though - or I'll start wearing Dick Jauron masks to the games. You kick when it is the smart option. Against high powered offenses - kicking questionable field goals usually results in a loss due to lack of enough points. It took Chan Gailey his entire time in Buffalo to learn that. Then he got fired. Edited October 3, 2017 by PolishDave

Crusher Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Give credit where it's due...the team is off to a fantastic start, and the QB plays a big part in it. At this point, it's foolish to knock TT. If he gets killed when the team loses, he has to get praise when they are getting huge wins against top notch opponents.

Virgil Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 I guess we cant sign Kirk Cousins either. He lost and threw for under 250 in Arrowhead. His WR dropped the game winning TD, but thats got to be on Kirk. Im glad we have this new definition of what a good starting quarterback is.

He is not the future and there is no way he gets better. They should tank for the draft. It is the only way. They would be stupid not to and will likely be stuck around 500 forever. And that is way worse than just losing all your games.
SlimShady'sSpaceForce Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Shady, you gotta admit you're pretty much a closet anTy guy, at the very least. You say weird hyperbolic things that aren't true like the team has a 3rd down % of 30% and bring up the record of an entire football team regarding Taylor passing 30+ times and you've said that this team needs to get to (what was it again...?) 10-2 or something like that for you to start believing in Taylor. I've said all along and I'll say it again, I don't think Taylor is going to be all that much different a QB than he was the last couple years. But I've also thought the QB the last couple years was pretty good. I saw things I wanted him to improve a bit on (throwing guys open/going through progressions/3rd down conversions) and so far he looks like he's doing better with those things, but not like monumentally better. I think the hard part of this conversation is that there are many who cling steadfastly to a traditional pocket passer. Taylor will never ever be that. But what Taylor seems to be growing into in the right system (and Dennison's looks like the right system right now) can be a very good QB, probably sporadically a top 10 guy. And with this defense, that's enough to do some very serious damage in terms of making the playoffs and even in the playoffs. Some have said such concrete things against Taylor that I suspect if he continues to play as he's played so far or even better, those posters will disappear and we'll find them hiding under new usernames. There are 1 or 2 in particular I haven't seen make a single comment since the Denver game. And hardly a peep the week after the Jets game. He just popped in after the Carolina game to make a few (negative, obviously) comments. Gee, I wonder why. Some posters thrive off misery. Probably why they've enjoyed the last 17 years trolling Bills message boards. I AM NOT ANTI TYROD. Funny that. I say I don't think Taylor is going to be all that much different a QB than he was the last couple years and I'm AntiTyrod You say I've said all along and I'll say it again, I don't think Taylor is going to be all that much different a QB than he was the last couple years And you are not?
Billsfan1972 Posted October 3, 2017 Author Posted October 3, 2017 The thread was not Anti-Tyrod, but an indictment of the entire offensive scheme and the lack of investment in the WR position and trading away Watkins for draft picks (Gaines has been a surprise, but if they wanted him, they didn't need to trade Watkins to get him). The issue is this Offense will be incapable of scoring and moving the ball and has to play almost perfect to amass 300 yards in offense. And Tyrod is not to blame.

I agree with being aggressive part, but Hauschka kicking 55 and 56 .... 11 straight ... go for it if you can. I wanted him to kick one in the 1st QTR (or was itt he 2nd). That would have been a nice buffer and given the Bills a 2 score advantage. Then I would have sat more comfortably in the 4th QTR. Im glad we have this new definition of what a good starting quarterback is. Yeah we, I mean I get it. We are not allowed to have expectations that the team can improve in all 3 areas. If the play call is run, they run. If the playcall is pass they pass or TT scrambles about to pass / run. I saw this yesterday snd I had to comment We have the worst WR corps Yet, we are one dropped pass from being 4-0. Edited October 3, 2017 by ShadyBillsFan

No doubt the kicker is good. Most games it is totally okay to do that and take the field goal. Playing teams like the Patriots though, where you enter the game confidently thinking you need to put up 30 for a win, you can't kick on fourth and short. You need to get to 30 by the end of the game. You aren't going to get 8 field goals to go with your 1 touchdown. Kicker is bound to miss one if he even gets that many opportunities. In past years, you could tell the mentality of the Bills' coaches when playing the Patriots. The Bills would march down the field on the first drive, get inside the 10 yard line and end up settling for a field goal. Right then and there you would know, with confidence, that the Bills were going to lose. No way they were going to get to 30 + points. You may as well quit watching the game. It was so predictable. Only way the Bills win in a game like that then, is if they miraculously get turnovers against the Patriots or they get a couple of very unusual positive things to go their way. That can happen, but it is very unlikely. Part of the problem with Dick Jauron (and I think will be an ongoing issue with McDermott) is that he refused to try to put teams away by getting up 2 touchdowns or more on them. As soon as he had the lead, he would go into "protect the lead mode" instead of bullet in the enemy's head mode. I strongly desire a Bills team that will utterly destroy its opponent with superior play as early as possible instead of letting teams hang around and compete in the fourth quarter. I wouldn't go into protect the lead mode until my team was up by at least 2 touchdowns - or maybe less if it was really late in the game. I don't want close games. I want blowouts with the Bills being the victors.

You have to keep up with the Big Boys to make it to the dance. Personally, I don't think a ruining game alone can do that. thats jmo
Billsfan1972 Posted October 3, 2017 Author Posted October 3, 2017 Exactly the Bills and the idea of a 14 point lead is non-existent. Yep 1-2X's/yr it happens (SF, NYJ & Miami), but usually it is close to the vest and hope you are ahead in the 4th (as they don't come back either). But yes so far so good in 2017. Doesn't make for exciting offensive football though.

Doesn't make for exciting offensive football though. Bills were 12th and 10th in points scored last two seasons. The defense was the main problem the last two seasons. This offense doesn't have enough skill position players this seasons to score that many points. I wish they had more at WR and a better back up to McCoy. But they still don't turn the ball over. We'll see. But our kicker is light years better this season. Things even out. Esp with an awesome defense. Edited October 3, 2017 by JM2009

Only one start better and that is 4-0. Only one team has that. Why is it amazing for fans to be excited at 3-1, with the quality of the wins? This makes no sense.
Kirby Jackson Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Wow, imagine having a opinion consistent with your other opinions. What a "narrative." Lol. I see the TT guys still haven't changed. If I thought Rex was a dog **** defensive coach, would you call it an opinion slanted towards my "anti-Rex narrative?" No, because it was proven true. Opinions supported by facts are all that we ask for. Rex took the #2 DVOA defense and brought them to 24 & 27. He leaves and they are right near the top. That supports that he was awful.

Well if you look since the Bills last playoff appearance many years started well and (2-2 or better) and slowly reality sunk in.... https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/buf/2000.htm Go ahead Bills, prove me wrong....... Just seen this story played out over and over......
