26CornerBlitz Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I expected him to get off to a much better start given his family's NFL background and his College production.
Rad Likes The Bills Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Only three games, he's a rookie getting acclimated to the game.
Rubes Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 As they say, WR is one of the toughest positions to learn in the pros.
Lurker Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 (edited) I expected him to get off to a much better start given his family's NFL background and his College production. The NFL is a lot faster than the games at East Carolina State. The wheels in his head are tuning too slowly, but that shold change as the season progresses. A bit of diffence in level of competition: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/conferences/american/2016.html Edited September 24, 2017 by Lurker

Catching the ball cleanly seems to be his biggest issue.
Kaenon Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 (edited) Sure, a bit... But none of our wide receivers have more than 3 receptions in any of our first 3 games. Tyrod Taylor doesn't throw down the field this year. Just check downs to RBs and some passes to the TEs. We might as well not have WRs. Week 3 - 6 WR receptions Matthews: 3 Holmes: 2 K. Clay: 1 Week 2 - 7 WR receptions Matthews: 3 Holmes: 2 Jones: 2 Week 1 - 4 WR receptions Matthews: 2 Jones: 1 Holmes: 1 Edited September 24, 2017 by Kaenon
starrymessenger Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Not worried about Zay Jones. He'll be just fine imo.
boyst Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Catching the ball cleanly seems to be his biggest issue. didn't watch today's game but the last two weeks I think it's been mental. Focused so much on routes, positioning, reading the defense; I'm hoping he is just learning
Jasovon Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Rookie WRs struggle historically with the speed of the game, however it is the fact he can't seem to catch which shocks me.
JaCrispy Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I expected him to get off to a much better start given his family's NFL background and his College production. Jerry Rice had a rough rookie season with regards to the dropsies...not worried...rookie growing pains.
Deranged Rhino Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Catching the ball cleanly seems to be his biggest issue. Agreed, which never seemed to be the problem from (what little) I saw of his college tape. I'm guessing a lot of it is mental and now he's pressing a bit.

CDogg20 Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 He needs to catch the first td that bounced off his hands. Last week I stuck up for the kid but doing that on a regular basis will end up in a lot of picks... I still have high hopes for the kid tho.
EmotionallyUnstable Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Agreed. For a player who was supposed to have an excellent catch radius and being sold as a sure handed receiver, he has missed a number of opportunities that you would expect an NFL receiver to have.
Lurker Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Catching the ball cleanly seems to be his biggest issue. He's had some attempts that would be difficult for seasoned vets. That ball that bounced off his hands in the EZ today was catchable, but tough nevertheless. Still, it bears watching. I thought his technique was weak on the ball he droped in the Carolina game--jumped unnecessarily and/or too soon, making the attempt that much harder than it needed to be.
EmotionallyUnstable Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 He was known for his excellent hands. Exactly. The TD pass should have been caught as well as the slant later in the game. It was a heater, but was on the money and went right through his hands
Gunsgoodtime Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Rookie WRs struggle historically with the speed of the game, however it is the fact he can't seem to catch which shocks me. This...I have been very disappointed up to this point, east just talking to a buddy about it earlier
TPS Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 In addition to being a rook, i would think it has a lot to do with the slow progression of a new offense. Let's see what happens in the second half of the season.
reddogblitz Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 (edited) Dude can't catch a cold. I don't want to have to bust out the B word yet. Hopefully he starts catching soon. On the TD, smart move by Dennison to keep a receiver behind Zay that might be able to catch the football after it goes through his hands. Edited September 24, 2017 by reddogblitz
Augie Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I'm confident things will slow down for him and he'll be all we hoped for. It takes a little time, especially from a smaller school. It's not a talent deficiency, it's getting comfortable between the ears.
