Webb the best Cam, Bills ‘D’ could ask for

Bills QB Joe Webb is unlikely to see action at quarterback on Sunday against Carolina. He will play on special teams, as he served on kick return and some other units last Sunday. But some of Webb’s best work at quarterback came in practice this week to help Buffalo’s defense prepare for Cam Newton.

Each week coaches try to find the player for the scout team that offers the most realistic look of the opponent, including the player skill set if possible. Joe Webb was a perfect match to play Cam Newton for Buffalo’s defense in practice this week for a few reasons.

How to counter Panthers speed on defense

The Carolina Panthers are a fast flow defense. They have great speed at the second level and get to the ball quickly in numbers. Their men up front are all attack-minded and come full speed on every play. When facing talent that can match your skill position players in the speed department, there are some things that can be done to slow them down.

Misdirection on plays can keep a defense like Carolina’s honest. If they bit too hard on the initial fake, there could be some big gains to be had on the back side.

So Tate is inactive. Does that mean the guy we picked up in the Seymour trade is our returner?

Is Tate hurt? Does this mean Klay is returning kicks today?

Looks like Clay is the returner. Not sure what it means for Tate just yet.

@ChrisBrownBills

Jordan Matthews and Micah Hyde out to take punt return reps w/Kaelin Clay. Jones taking KR reps. Sun will be an issue. #Bills

Is it just me or does anyone else hate it when a high caliber/ much-needed rotation player takes punts or kick-offs? Can you imagine if Hyde got hurt taking a punt return? Tate and Klay are good players, but afterthoughts on the offensive side of the ball and, as such, far more expendable.

Probably just backups in case of injury. Never hurts to get some reps in case of emergency.
