Bears cut 2016 week 1 starter Jeremy Langford

@joebuscaglia

And just like that, another RB is available. It's the way of the NFL, guys and gals. Unfortunately, backup RBs are devalued.

I loved him since his Sparty days. Damn.

But being a day 3 pick, jw was already quite literally the most devalued prospect imaginable. Essentially a league minimum, multi year contract with no guarantees and he ends up an RFA at the end. He's getting the absolute minimum given to him and we hold the maximum leverage you can get over any player basically

I like the fact that fans don't like the roster moves. Everybody loved Whaley's moves because he was doing all the things a fan playing Madden would do. But if the message board has taught me anything it's that the fans generally don't know much.

Case in point, some fans criticize draft evaluations for using hindsight.

We didn't like some of his moves either. Hogan and Freddy amongst them. But the last laugh was with them. Cause Hogan won a SB ring and Jackson got a playoff berth/win.

One other thing...good teams don't inspire some of their best off season signings to "retire" and focus on social activism ala Bolduin. He's not a dummy. Now that Edelman is down, he wants to sign with Patriots. Funny how all that "changing the world" talk is put on hold when you think you can win.

Correct, which just goes to show you they didn't think nearly as much of him as the fans did.

Yep. Mock draft geeks loved him too because his picks matched up well with their 'boards'.

So much this it isn't funny

I'm just surprised that they put him at the absolute bottom of the list. and by a margin of keeping older/pricier guys too.

My hunch is that Tolbert was seen as the short yardage specialist and not in competition as the primary backup role. And that they made the determination that Banyard was the more serviceable overall backup.

They may have been wrong but I'm guessing that was the thinking

McDermott said that it came down to ST considerations at his presser this morning.

I mean, that's the obvious logic. But he's still cheaper than even Taiwan jones, comes with more long term control and because he's not a vested vet his salary isn't guaranteed if he's on the day 1 roster giving more short term flexibility

Not only ties, but even a slight loss in the competition probably goes to JW. I'm just surprised they thought he flat lost it.

After listening to McD in the press confence I don't necessarily think he lost the competition. I think the Bills overemphasize the ST emphasis and just decided that even though JWill may have been a slightly better back up RB, since they have Tolbert and a decent Banyard and Taiwan, they just made a tough choice. I think if you asked McD off the record who he thought was a better flat out RB he would say Williams. I don't personally agree with that philosophy, although I liked what I saw out of Banyard, too.

Maybe winning games is more important than saving a few bucks.

And yet all those things still give JW the tie breaker. As I said, short of obviously losing it is a head scratcher. They decided he lost and I think many here didn't see him actually lose.

(as ktd notes perhaps by weighting considerations different though)

That was most likely the calculation

Problem is Williams is a threat to score on almost every down. Of the backs we have now, besides Shady - who would you game plan for? In this league having 2 backs able to take it to the house is a luxury. But true to our form, we waive (not even trade) luxury.

I get the focus on special teams. But fire Crossman and watch this ST improve dramatically. He has done nothing here and did nothing in Detroit. He's a conservative coach. That doesn't fit the make up of his players.

Our special teams was pretty good under Marrone IIRC. Wasn't Crossman the coach then too?

Because we spend an incredible amount of resources on the unit, not because crossman is great
