Techie Question: TouchScreen T-Stat SDCard Size

Can Any techies answer this? Simple, to make a long story short, I finely installed a new touch screen thermostat that I purchased almost 2 years ago. Had to pull a C-Wire since old 20 year old programmable T-Stat (utilized x2 AA batteries) was only a four wire device And as the saying goes: "Never tune up the boat in the middle of the ocean." We are in a nice stretch of weather, no cooling or heating AND I HAVE nothing to do @ The Happy Hacienda. I could have eliminated independent fan control and used four wires... But wire run was a mess, not in conduit, etc...

...And I turn everything into a Federal project... ;-) ;-) So I finely pull new wire and install T-Stat. Actually, cleaned the wire run up, ran emt (conduit) & had old T-Stat moved and can use it as a temporary run in a pinch if my fancy dancy computer one craps the bed... Can even throw the old original Honeywell "Round" up in a HVAC emergency

Anyway...

My simple question, my newly installed device can take a SD card, company (Venstat) recomnends a 2gb card. 2gigs, do they still make them?

Will a 16gb card work? And if not, why? I thought devices get squirrelly over 64gb and with the mega cards sized cards. File allocation table thingy?

All I want to do is load pictures... T-Stat doubles as a digital photo frame, screensaver. I have a 16gb card laying around. Again, company (Venstar) recommends 2gb, huh? What does that mean?

It's this device: Venstar T7850

Should I bite the bullet and spend 10 bucks at Amazon and get a wimpy 2gb SD card... LoL

Dunno a damned thing about your thermostat and not gonna bother Googling it

But I do know that most SDC devices like that use the FAT32 file system which maxes out at 32GB. So a 16GB card *should* work. And by *should* I mean I've had devices fail to play with 16GB cards from one manufacturer but have no problem with 8GB and 128GB from the same

Thanx...

That's what Venstar means too, right? They are "recommending" which doesnt mean mandating.

If it fails to play nice... Can I screw up device? It's a SanDisk... Which are of better quality, name brand?

It's gonna get hot on Monday and you know how hot woman can get. Then cool down after that. Should I wait till Tuesday to stick it in? :-)

They are 'recommending' not endorsing

And SanDisk is the same manufacturer of the 8, 16, and 128 GB that I mentioned above. So uhhhhh, good luck

What happened when you tried it? Did it reject it? Or are you afraid sparks will shoot out and kill you? Worse that's gonna happen is the thermostat says it can't read it. The new wiring should not affect how the thermostat uses a memory card. And I'd be worried about some knock off third party party thermostat that also functions as a digital picture frame.

Oh, works great, the T-Stat that is. Wasn't afraid of the hardwiring, that's all good or messing that up. I was afraid on the computer end, mess up filing system, jam the firmware or something bad on that end.

I found their website. I guess card has to be formatted FAT32 and have the Venstar firmware on it. They make system for dealers & others to upload their logos, etc... Pictures, info, T-Stat functions...

Transfers happen through their "ColorTouch Assistant" program (download program) via a desktop computer.

Again, I just didn't want to jazz up the computer end of things. Brick it or something. I never tried the 16gb...

...I just bought the one they recommended... Amazon, under 20 bucks

I thought an SD card was an SD card, I didn't realize there were so many different classifications.

Thanks for all the help, now my wife can load pictures of HER cats. Gee, that's swell... My life is hell! ;-) :-/

But I will pay her back and jack the heat up to 90 through WiFi and over my phone, when I am at work on Midnights... I will sweat the family out while they sleep!

I need a new router.

I got one in a box... Brand new. Hasn't been installed longer than T-Stat... Going on 2+ years. ;-)

Comcast claims I need a faster one too... Some blah, blah, blah, # # # compliant thingy... "Mine is obsolete." My old router still works fine. I am not going fast enough on my 2009 router that I purchased myself. Blah, blah, blah... What the eff is wrong with always upgrading... Old one works, not broken, why should I have to waste money and buy a new one.

I am waiting for Comcast to MAKE mine obsolete... And pull plug. Then I will piss and moan... ;-) I won't tell them I am too lazy to hook my new one up.

I am such a slacker and PITA.

Yeah... UPDATE: I finally get around to installing SDcard. I use the 2gb card they recommend on faq page off their website. I make sure it is formatted FAT32.

Great... It works for updating firmware file loaded off the computer and ColorTouch Desktop Application yet, I can't load pics! Format it to FAT32, the things chugs when importing pics to it. I go round and round w/tech support until they finally say to try another PC. WTF! I try my daughters Mac and can't even get pics to save via their downloaded desktop program.

Again, kill power @ furnace (c-wire/transformer) and boot up with 2gb SDcard in, with firmware update on it, it works flawlessly. No play nicey trying to recognize card after that.

Anyway... I put the 16gb card in and pics import and t-stat recognizes card! And, it transfers blazingly fast from PC to card reader prior to that.

Could it have been the new Desktop Application and firmware that rendered lower gb card not recognisable???

Very screwy why would the firmware update off card but not be recognisable after that?

You are totally right, some play nice, others don't. It was their recommendations that had me buy that blasted 2gb card in first place. Is Venstar in cahoots w/Amazon to unload small cards that they gave in surplus. I guess I will just use small card for firmware updates.

;-)

But all is happy in the valley now, the wife has pics of get cats on the t-stat. How swell! :-/ :-/
