DrW Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 (edited) Joni Mitchell rarely did covers. However, her cover of "Twisted" on "Court and Spark" is one of my favorites. However, I could not find any live version of her cover. Instead, here is a live recording of the writer of the song, Annie Ross, accompanied by Count Basie's band/orchestra. The mastermind behind it, Joe Byrd, did a follow-up record, and it is boring. My favorite songs of their album: First, "The American Metaphysical Circus" was the song that introduced me to this band; I heard it first on German public radio. To me, it sounds like the Beatles' "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" on speed. Second, a scathing comment on American family values, wrapped up in a very nice melody... 1 Quote

Follow up album... do you mean Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies? If so then yes, that was a yawner for sure. I have a whole section of vinyl I haven't looked through in probably 15 years and I "think" I still have a copy of TUSOA... I know I sold a couple of copies way back on eBay. I really should go and crate all of that... just plain old laziness I guess lol. 1 Quote

However, it should be remembered that Jefferson Airplane did exist before Grace Slick joined the band, with Signe Toly Anderson on vocals. Sadly, Signe died in 2016, the same day as JA's Paul Kantner. Edited March 25, 2023 by DrW Quote
DrW Posted March 26, 2023 Posted March 26, 2023 One of the first all-female rock bands, Fanny. June Millington plays a mean guitar. And again, it is German public TV that made these live performance videos possible. And here is a very competent cover of one of my favorite Beatles' songs. 1 Quote
T&C Posted March 26, 2023 Posted March 26, 2023 Solid intro to Janis... sounds better in mono to me. After Cheap Thrills I lost interest in her and Big Brother. On a side note... these Mainstream albums are pricey and they cover a lot of groups. Quote

Sci-fi fans might have seen the female vocalist as actress. Do you recognize her? The Black Keys, The White Stripes, The Black Crows. All 3 very popular bands with followings. I Love the White Stripes but the other 2 I know very little besides their mainstream hits. But I plan to investigate. PS: I asked nate regarding the band BongWater. He chuckled and said no he didn't know then but what a great band name. He knows a LOT about music and has great recall of specifics. Much more than me. black keys black crows Edited August 6 by muppy Quote
