I'm all over the place with what I listen to and what I like.  Hard rock, blues. metal, punk, reggae, ska, pop,...recently I revisited  some of the 70's Soul Train-ish stuff.  And if there's humor involved, even better - pretty sure we both share a love of Zappa.

There are still great bands making music. One band worth checking out (if you're not already familiar) is Umphreys McGee.  IMO they're a jam band without the hippie mentality. They play pretty much every genre that I like, great live band and have a history of mashups/medleys like this (Marley/Talking Heads/Chicago/Zappa):

Most of Umphrey's McGee's original songs did not leave a lasting impression for me. However, I like their mashups. The one you selected is one of their best. My personal favorite...

However, the idea of "mashups" is not really novel. One of the first attempts in rock was "Apache Dropout" by the Edgar Broughton Band; they fused Captain Beefheart's  "Dropout Boogie" with the Shadows' "Apache".

Yup I get that. But they are a completely different band live - including their own material.  Saw them absolutely crush an average song to open a show a few years back.

Didn't know either of the origs from Beefheart/Shadows so that mashup was lost on me - but very cool that the concept dates back. Here's my fave UM mashup from a Halloween show (skip the first 2:15 of band/costume intros):

my bestie is a HUGE Motorhead guy and I am so going to turn him on to this today

Does he know about Hawkwind? The song "Motorhead" was written for that band while Lemmy was still in it. He's on record saying he loved that band and never would have left, but they kicked him out because they liked acid and he liked speed. He took the song (about speed, of course) with him and the rest as they say, is history.

Conceived and written by a 19 year old and played by crack musicians.. I'd have to wonder if a lot of 19 year old's nowadays have ever seen 12 musicians total. I check this one out once a year and today happened to be that day. Hard one to pull off live but they nailed it.

Another early mashup. The Nice (Keith Emerson's band before ELP) fuses a Bob Dylan song with Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6. Pure genius.

Spiceknot - "If You Wanna Breathe My Sulfur" - YouTube

I never cared for them when they were big but their songs are probably one of my favorite guilty pleasures of the 90s to listen too.  This one was hilarious as well

I loved Reading Rainbow as a kid as well.  Rather funny to listen to DMX over the intro
