row_33 Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Good show with a few insiders from the good old days. Tons of hindsight and understood traces of bitterness still. But.... they are wondering about the next NFL contracts, will Facebook/Twitter/Amazon riches swamp the offers of the networks and put out the NFL completely online within the next 5 years?

Yeah, good luck getting the TV companies to agree with that.
row_33 Posted July 27, 2017 Author Posted July 27, 2017 Yeah, good luck getting the TV companies to agree with that. They figure Moonves is too powerful to let anything get away from CBS. (and that CBS learned very painfully after losing the NFC package back in the day.) Amazon can come in with an offer 10 times that of CBS and Fox without blinking.... Just some thoughts, ESPN never saw the cable-cutting that cratered them in about 18 months of subscription loss.
Maury Ballstein Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Put the games online for 9.99 to watch anywhere any platform.
row_33 Posted July 27, 2017 Author Posted July 27, 2017 For 20 years I've had a cable package that for about $1 a day gives me every pro and college sports game (and more) that I do not get on regular cable, i figure it's worth it. i do not doubt this is all online by 2022, which would badly damage a few sports situations that I enjoy.
Royale with Cheese Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Yeah, good luck getting the TV companies to agree with that. Couldn't the TV companies have apps in which you can purchase a game?
row_33 Posted July 27, 2017 Author Posted July 27, 2017 Couldn't the TV companies have apps in which you can purchase a game? The TV companies are not working to develop this, and are on the hook for short-term demands by shareholders. How do they walk away from an offer multiples of the highest that a network can scratch together?
PromoTheRobot Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Put the games online for 9.99 to watch anywhere any platform. But free to season ticket holders.
4_kidd_4 Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Just read that Twitter is losing US users. Stock dropped by 10%, and it's already affecting their ad sales. Somewhat relevant to this conversation. Personally, all I 'care' about is Bills games. As long as they keep coming in on the HD antenna, I'm good. I'm not paying a premium for sports channels. In fact, I'm not paying for cable/dtv at all anymore.

Seasons1992 Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I listen to every Simmons podcast and this one in particular was very in-depth and really showed why ESPN is laying off so many people. When I took my cable equipment in over the holidays, I got there before they opened. There were already 6 people in front of me. ALL had their equipment in hand. ALL cut the cord just like me at the same time. One HD antenna on the roof, fast internet, and a couple Roku's and a Fire and we are all set. I miss nothing.

I get CBC in HD too, great for HNIC on those January saturday nights. And their playoff coverage is fantastic. Reg season NHL is 'meh', but once playoffs start I can't get enough.
