Marijuana And Violent Crime

Recommended Posts

The medical pot issue is already being discussed. This issue being pushed by the Attorney General is another. What a waste of time, lives and resources to prosecute people for pot.

The Trump administration is readying for a crackdown on marijuana users under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

President Trump’s Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety, led by Sessions, is expected to release a report next week that criminal justice reform advocates fear will link marijuana to violent crime and recommend tougher sentences for those caught growing, selling and smoking the plant.

Sessions sent a memo in April updating the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice Department (DOJ) component heads on the work of the task force, which he said would be accomplished through various subcommittees. In the memo, Sessions said he has asked for initial recommendations no later than July 27.

“Task Force subcommittees will also undertake a review of existing policies in the areas of charging, sentencing, and marijuana to ensure consistency with the Department's overall strategy on reducing violent crime and with Administration goals and priorities,” he wrote.

Criminal justice reform advocates fear Sessions’s memo signals stricter enforcement is ahead.

“The task force revolves around reducing violent crime and Sessions and other DOJ officials have been out there over the last month and explicitly the last couple of weeks talking about how immigration and marijuana increases violent crime,” said Inimai Chettiar, director of the Brennan Center's Justice Program.

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker is proposing a far-reaching bill that would both legalize marijuana at the federal level and encourage states to legalize it locally through incentives.

The New Jersey Democrats bill, called the Marijuana Justice Act, has virtually no chance of passage in the Republican-controlled Congress and in a presidential administration thats decidedly anti-marijuana.

Cory Booker is pretty much owned by the lobbyists so any legislation he's pushing probably should be scrutinized. He's been shilling for progressive cred ever since he voted down the prescription drug import proposal and got called out for it.

Interesting.

I think you left out ILLEGAL marijuana farms.

I wonder what could help slow down the illegal market?

I think "illegal" is a given. Since there were no legal operations until a few weeks ago.

More reason to legalize it.

There'd be no need for this waste.

But maybe it's the pesticides that cure "disease," not the pot.

So you think legalizing, regulating and taxing the crap out of it is going to slow down the black market?

You don't?

It's supply and demand. Full on legalization is going to DRASTICALLY increase the supply. There are going to be huge corporate grows. We are already seeing it. Prices are dropping and that is only going to continue.

When marijuana is completely legal everywhere there will be a few large companies selling average weed, think Budweiser. Many people will choose to grow there own, the tomato plant model. And then there will be small local companies selling "craft" cannabis. The black market for marijuana will basically die.

Alcohol and cigarettes are heavily taxed and regulated. Is there a huge black market for alcohol?

You ever have moonshine?

And Indian cigarettes are very prevalent.

The black market would change and get much smaller, but it would still exist. Especially because underage kids won't be able to buy it.

Yes, I've bought moonshine legally. Is it illegal? Are Indian cigarettes illegal? Underage kids can't buy alcohol, they don't go buy it from the guy on the corner. They just have someone of age buy it, same will happen with pot. Do you think the black market for alcohol and cigarettes is a huge problem in this country?

I'm sure there will still be a very small black market, but it will be drastically reduced. The argument that the high taxes will increase the black market is false.

LOL at something even more unrealistic than pot curing all diseases.

If the shine isn't made by a licensed distiller & hasn't been taxed it is most certainly illegal.

The higher the taxes, the larger the black market will be.

There is already a huge black market for pot. It will not completely disappear. Kids will still be purchasing through established illegal channels.
