jimmy10 Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Hey, if you can't beat 5'8" lacrosse players from New Jersey, you might as well join them.
thebandit27 Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 I don't know about being at Sherman's level, I still think he will have issues tackling. But if anyone can correct his tackling issues, it's Belichek. Unfortunately, good CB's are hard to retain after their rookie deals as their second contract are usually astronomical. Agreed on all... Seems like effectively re-signing corners requires being proactive at the 3-year benchmark. That FA money is so plentiful and enticing
GunnerBill Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 How did the Thursday night week 2 game against the Jets not make his lowlights film? One of the worst CB performances I've ever witnessed. Yea I am a big Gilmore fan but he was awful against the Jets. He had a very good season otherwise. There was a weakness at corner last year on the Bills..... but the weak link is sill here.... hopefully he is primed for a rebound of his own. Hey, if you can't beat 5'8" lacrosse players from New Jersey, you might as well join them. Has Hogan lost 5 inches somewhere?
eball Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 I find myself in the strange position of admitting I've been a Gilmore fan and defender, yet at the same time I've watched games and grimaced at his play. I think he's a terrible tackler with poor technique, and there's no question he gave up a bunch of big plays. I'm not rooting against him, but I'll be curious to see how he performs under Belichick. I'm guessing we'll find out whether or not it was "communication issues" that occasionally derailed his play in Buffalo.

This sums up - 100% perfectly and accurately - how I have felt, and still feel, about Gilmore.

He was one of he best players on this roster for all of his time here. And I am not just someone who always talks up people who leave the Bills.... I don't think Zach Brown or Robert Woods are going to light it up with their new squads... not did I think Levitre was going to be the best guard in the league or Byrd the best safety..... I just think Gilmore is already a top 12 corner in the NFL with potential to be top 5 or 6. I'd have re-signed him here.... even allowing for the big money. In my view he is a cornerstone player you don't let walk. Having said all that.... I do like the Tre White pick. I think he will be a solid starter as a rookie and can himself push to be in that top 15 corners in the league with time and development. I just think it is very likely that he will give up more catches and yards in 2017 than Gilmore in 2016 and particularly 2015.
SoulMan Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Can't wait to see how the Patsies and Belly handle his finger pointing after being burned. Yep
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Jonah Javad from WGRZ had a great comeback for Gilmore: https://www.facebook.com/jonahjavadtv/videos/1578773798820936/ Yep, in case anyone has missed Gilmore play, now they can see his highlights... My new favorite TV personality.
Runninrams Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 (edited) Yep difference is in New England he knows he doesnt have to do everything himself because he actually has competent safeties over the top....huge difference knowing McCourty is back there patrolling. funny, the same things were said about Revis coming to NE....he's washed up, he's slow, he isnt good anymore, he's not the old Revis...then poof, like "magic", put him in a good situation and he's vintage Revis Edited July 19, 2017 by Runninrams

CommonCents Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Nailed it I'm holding you both accountable on this! I'm still sticking to this signing being a mistake for the Pats, I would have paid Bouye.

I would've been upset with paying Bouye. We're talking about a guy that's only a year younger than Gilmore, but has a total of 19 career starts (nearly all of which came in the slot--not on the boundary) and only 1 year of solid productivity.

I like Bouye but he is a bit more of a one year wonder. He took a huge step this year. Gilmore has been consistently good over 5 years with the exception of that year he played 6 games with 1 arm.

If he was on another team other than the Bills, he would in the discussion for top cb. But for whatever reason (because he doesn't smile or celebrate), Bills fans decided they didn't like him. I get more convinced that people don't watch other teams play if they harp on Gilmore giving up catches and yards. Despite our high school offense, teams are throwing the ball for massive yard totals more than ever. And I like White. Seems like a great kid. But he has a long way to go before getting on Gilmore's level, though I'm sure fans will say he's better right now. And it's just another example of the Bills spinning their wheels of letting a good player go and drafting his replacement with a high pick. These stupid moves are what keeps a team out of the playoffs 17 years in a row.

I'm not saying in Buffalo, I'm talking about a team that had all that space like the Pats. They should have signed Bouye, Gilmore will prove to be a mistake but that wart won't show up until they lose some of that supporting cast. It's easy to point to Gilmore's experience over Bouye's. IMO that's lazy. He was a UDFA and worked for his chance and finally solidified himself. Quite the opposite of Gilmore. https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-time-to-start-talking-about-texans-cb-a-j-bouye When he tears it up again this season, the next easiest thing to do will be to claim that no one could have expected him to repeat last years performance. Bouye is going to get exposed, bad. He has 1 year as a starter where he played well but wasnt great. Also helps being in that stacked Texans defense. Let's see how good he is when he's on an island instead of going against 2's and 3's while Jonathan Joseph sheltering him and taking the #1 matchup. You dont drop 13.5 a year on a CB that has only been a starter for 1 year.

Lazy? It's lazy to state the fact that Bouye has only 19 games of starting experience, and that very few of that work has come as a boundary corner? IMO, lazy is tossing aside 5 years of performance from a former 1st round pick and labeling a guy that cannot possibly be characterized as anything more than a one-year wonder at this juncture as the next big thing...but that's just me. As for the inevitability of his success this year, well, I don't remember saying that he won't have another good season. I remember saying that I feel a lot better trusting Gilmore to perform as a boundary corner than paying a (primarily) slot guy $11M AAV to play boundary corner with 19 career starts. You might even say that such thinking qualifies as "Commonsense"
GunnerBill Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 I am not anti-Bouye. I think he will be a stud in Jacksonville as well - he and Ramsey has the chance to be the best CB tandem in the NFL this year. I just don't think signing someone as good as Stephon can be a mistake.

You dont drop 13.5 a year on a CB that has only been a starter for 1 year. I don't know about that; he actually will be surrounded by a TON of talent in Jacksonville. The front-4 is quite nasty with Calais Campbell joining Malik Jackson, Ngakoue, and Dante Fowler. They have Telvin Smith and Myles Jack at LB. Their secondary features Jalen Ramsey alongside former pro bowler Tayshaun Gipson and FA acquisition Barry Church.
