C.Biscuit97 Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 (edited) I think he can be a top-10 corner. I don't think he has been in the last 4 years. He's not even in the discussion on this year end review: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000769950/article/yearend-cornerback-rankings-richard-sherman-lands-at-no-1 Or this one: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2717888-nfl1000-ranking-the-best-shutdown-cornerbacks Or this one: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000775730/article/xavier-rhodes-leads-top10-no-1-cornerbacks He's taking over for Logan Ryan, and I think he's better than Ryan. So he should have a good year. People threw at Ryan a lot. He was awesome pre Rex and his defense that made e eryone bad. He shut down WRs like Antonio Brown this year. We lost a really good player to an elite franchise and some want to pretend like it's not a big loss because SG doesn't smile. And I favor Belichick's eye slightly over bleacher report. He's a good player. I have legit not said otherwise. In his time in Buffalo, he has not been an elite top-10 cornerback for a full season. You can't ignore the first half of 2016 in evaluating him. He has had stretches where he struggles with penalties and big plays. Belichick values him higher because he believes probably both that he can coach him up on his deficiencies, and he probably has no interest in making Malcolm Butler the highest paid corner in football.

Gilmore has been tackling since 5th grade. Still can't do it. Too small and too weak. You can't coach up a skill that does not exist.

Some of y'all are dramatic. There's a wide gap between being a big hitter and utterly incapable. Dude lands somewhere in the middle.
row_33 Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 I'd hold off on telling Pats fans how much you think he's useless out there.

I'm fairly positive he is both taller and heavier than your average CB. Maybe average weight, but definitely above average height. But please, let's just make things up to make ourselves feel better about our entirely incorrect narrative
Straight Hucklebuck Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 I've said forever that Gilmore is a run of the mill corner. Just go right at him and he gives up catches. WGR will have his back, they love him. Gilmore is a top 15 CB in the NFL.... Based on what? His one year in 2015 when he was good? Yeah he had one year in PFF where he was good. Otherwise he is an average corner.

Does not change the fact he can not tackle. Is that better? Edited July 21, 2017 by cba fan

JerseyBills Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 For real. He was crapped on by a ton of fans from the second he got drafted and didn't smile. According to Bills fans, he was overrated anyways. Let him get paid a ton of money by that crappy team and let's concentrate on running Sammy out of town. He wasn't that good, simple as that. Imo, every year we had high hopes for Gilly, and he just didn't perform at the level we expected him to perform at. He was just a very inconsistent CB and every year we expected him to make the jump to elite status and put together a full season of great CB play. Yet all we got was flashes of great play. Basically the reason fans were so hard on him ,imo, is because we thought we had an elite cb, wanted him to succeed so bad but he was just so frustrating to watch. 1 quarter he's dominant, next quarter he's subpar. 3 games he's dominant followed by 2 games of subpar play. Extremely frustrating player to watch. So glad Whaley didn't pay him!Sammy is in a similar boat with fans I guess, except majority of us agree he is an elite talent, is consistent when getting targeted, but his health is the big debate.
GunnerBill Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Here's like 12 off the top of my head. Malcolm Butler Chris Harris, Jr. Josh Norman Patrick Peterson Aqib Talib Richard Sherman Vontae Davis Marcus Peters Xavier Rhodes Casey Hayward Janoris Jenkins AJ Bouye Jalen Ramsey Brent Grimes Trumaine Johnson Desmond Trufant Joe Haden Darius Slay This list is frankly laughable. Some of these guys can't hold Gilmore's jock.

Those in red are guys that would inspire some debate and warrant further film study to work out exactly where he'd place. Those struck out are in a class below. Best case scenario, he's my 10th CB at this point. Worst case, he's 15th.

Kirby talked recently about Zeke being his #1 player in the 2016 draft.... Jalen Ramsey was mine and I had a gap between he and Bosa. Xavier Rhodes is also a no for me. People talk about inconsistency with Gilmore but Rhodes tape is littered with it. I'd have Josh Norman in blue though.... I was a bit of a sceptic (still think the salary at Washington is crazy) but I think he really proved himself an elite corner last year.

GunnerBill Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 (edited) PFF is a garbage website. And he actually only had one season on PFF where he was bad..... the year where he was bad.... you know.... the one where he played with one arm for half the season. Edited July 21, 2017 by GunnerBill

If he can be consistent, he'd be a stud, but 4/5 years he has been very average and inconsistent. Off the top of my head , I'd add- Jimmy Smith Dominique Rogers Cromartie Pacman Jones Jason Verett Sam Shields Countless others that you can debate.. For example, Ronald Darby. He could excel in this system. He already outplayed Gilmore in year 1. He was the 2nd best CB at tackling last year according to PFF.

I'm just saying - FWIW literally no NFL pundit's have said Gilmore is a top 10 or top 15 corner. I said he could be if he can tackle better, and avoid those bad games. He's yet to make that jump.
