I've always found the opening to "Saving Private Ryan," incredibly powerful.

 

This is my vote.

 

I watched a special about the movie several years ago and they interviewed a few people who actually were at Normandy. Some couldn't watch the opening scene because it was so real and it basically brought back bad flashbacks.

The opening to Casino Royale was excellent; great start to the "new" James Bond.

 

Also the opening to American Beauty.

I'm surprised this one took 2 pages to get to, considering it's since become one of the more mimicked openings in modern cinema:

Idiocracy is one of those cult classics. Either you haven't seen it, seen it and didn't get it, or think it's one of the greatest comedies ever.
