Wow. That's a lot of jack for a guy who turns 38 in September.

Wow...that seems like a Leafs move from 10 years ago...the really thnk they are that close. Maybe they are, but I think everything broke perfect for them last year and they are in for a bit of a bit of a let down.

So, how many wins this year after all the moves?

Now's the time where someone chimes in that we have the deepest young talent in the NHL so it should only be about 7 more years until we get the #8 seed.

Tim Murray burned down what was once a foundation with potential. Now we have Eichel. And that's about it.

They are probably three years out from being a serious contender. Eichel, ROR, Samson should be a center spine for years to come.

Nylander is 1.5 years away, probably, from contributing. Risto is likely a #1 defenseman. He needs fewer minutes and help. McCabe is a first or second pair D.

The new fellas brought in on D should at least constitute an average blue line, which is a big step up from last year. Housley's system of puck possession should benefit the offense. GMTM made some mistakes, but he was nowhere near the disaster you habitually depict.

Teams elevate relatively quickly in the NHL. 16 teams make the playoffs and after how much time with douche Murray we are still 3 years away? And that with one of the top players in hockey as a centerpiece and a situation he walked into with 1000 draft picks and many movable pieces?

I hope they flourish and the new guy deserves a long leash, but to deny Murray was a complete and utter failure is simply ridiculous. He had perhaps the most chips in the NHL to play with and he went all in with neck tattoo among many other horrible moves....and he added the bonus of talking down to everyone. It is a fantastic thing that he is gone.

Okay, I'm not going to convince you to moderate your contempt for Tim Murray.

When I say 3 years, I mean three years from being a playoff team with at least a plausible chance at competing for the Cup.

I think there is an outside chance the Sabres make the playoffs this year. It will be a disappointment if they do not at least capture an eight seed next year.

So no different from the Bills?

Jeez. Buffalo sports is a sad state of affairs.

I am actually guardedly optimistic with the new regimes.

I liked both DW and TM, but they were both more scouts than GMs.

Neither seemed to think strategically enough or had a sufficient sense of building a team.

Alas, prolonged disappointment tends to create bitterness rather than build character.

It will be almost surreal if we actually start to be good.

They had a boatload of young players who played well. The young core will only get better. Without a doubt a lot of things went their way last year to enable them to perform beyond expectations. But no one can deny that they have a talented young core that will keep the team on an upward trajectory. Success in the NHL of today is predicated on speed and good skating rather than on heavy hitting and brutish play. They are surely built for success. And they have a coach who will keep the players accountable and staying within the structure.

Absolute nonsense. Your crusade against Murray is so over-the-top it's past the point of being comical.

Overall, he did a decent job of positioning a rebuilding and deliberately collapsed team to placing this team in a position to being competitive. It was never going to be a quick process. But that is not to say that he doesn't deserve criticisms for a number of his moves.

I never liked giving up a first round pick for Lehner. Ottawa was looking to move on from him yet he gratuitously gave up a first round pick that could have been used for a player who would now be ready to play on one of the top two forward lines. The Kulikov trade for Pysk certainly wasn't a good deal. I don't want to exaggerate Pysk's talents but I do believe he could have been a competent second or third pairing player on a unit that had a dearth of talent. The Moulson deal was a bad deal from a contract and term standpoint. The biggest criticism many people direct toward him that is warranted is how he miscalculated and bungled assembling a blue line unit. That unit was such a liability that it evaporated any chances for this team to be competitive.

Murray's worst deal was Bylsma, who refused to adapt to the players he had and literally got the worst out of just about everyone.

This team isn't anywhere near as far away as people think. If they can stay healthy, they'll make it this season and be a tough out.

I agree with you that in hindsight Bylsma was a bad coaching selection. I get tired of coaches who are wedded to their system instead (as you noted) adapting to their talent but also to the changing nature of play in the league. The worst example of that fault is Phil Jackson of the Knicks who insisted in being wedded to the triangle offense even when he didn't have the players to play that outmoded system.

Another damaging trait that Bylsma had was that he didn't relate to his players, especially the younger players. He was just too aloof and not engaged with them. In the end Murray sank his own ship with the misfire on his coaching hire.

The same could be said of Whaley hiring Ryan.

I feel like Rexy was Peg's guy. Not sure if he was hand picked by Whaley.

....he was TP's guy after Brandon convinced him about "butts in the seats".....didn't season tix eclipse 60,000?.....I'd bet Whaley wanted no part of the clown............

@SiriusXMNHL

As per @BuffNewsVogl #Sabres Goalie Robin Lehner and Forward Johan Larsson will file for arbitration #NHL

I'll give this to neck tattoo. He has some big brass ones. He should be writing the Sabres a refund check and an apology letter. Arbitration. OMG. I think arbitration in all sports is a good idea only if the arbitrator can say:

You are a lefty specialist that only gets one out every other game. A couple million per is enough....bye. Or:

You are a psychotic with a neck tattoo who has had some great plays/games but you are inconsistent as all hell and sometimes play like the worst goalie imaginable....only Tim Murray was stupid enough to want you in the first place.....GTFO of my office.
