Merkel taking hammer to German/U.S. relationship

Trump's actions have 'weakened' the West, German foreign minister says

Germany's foreign minister launched a scathing criticism of Donald Trump on Monday, claiming the US President's actions have "weakened" the West and accusing the US government of standing "against the interests of the European Union."
Just 24 hours after German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that Europe could no longer completely rely on traditional allies such as the US and Britain, the country's top diplomat, Sigmar Gabriel, went a step further.
"Anyone who accelerates climate change by weakening environmental protection, who sells more weapons in conflict zones and who does not want to politically resolve religious conflicts is putting peace in Europe at risk," Gabriel said.
"The short-sighted policies of the American government stand against the interests of the European Union. The West has become smaller, at least it has become weaker."
ouch
blunt blast of disdain for don and his vision
cant say that i blame her. but still

i also find it hard to believe dons term will turn into anything but disaster. we will find out if shes and i are right or not soon, i suspect. still giving don that lightning strike chance in hell he grows the fk up and turns things around. c'mon miracle
in the mean time germany has to move on. i can see that

lol Obama was caught spying on Merkel and this is what puts her over the edge? Also I love how she said it's time for Europe to stand on their own....ok shouldn't that be the goal for any nation?

Trump has not weakened environmental protection. He just hasn't agreed to new standards. The European Union has no one to blame but themselves for their weakened status. Brexit was the fault of the EU's ridiculous immigration policy and Europe has benefited from our military presence and protection enough that they could become soft and socialist.

You clearly haven't read his budget proposal yet.

Lost in all this is the simple fact that no one in the EU understands that it's not up to the President to ratify the Paris Accords. It's up to the Senate.

Since Obama never saw fit to have them ratified (not that the Senate would have ratified them anyway), there's nothing for Trump to "pull out" of.

Alsoooooo....

best of luck with defending yourselves. No more US military alliances, no more protection for free.

Auf Wiedersehen, frau Merkel.

All the free democratic nations should defend themselves, or else we might lose our sacred rights in this big dangerous world. Setting the good countries against each other is bad for freedom and good for the kleptocrats like Putin

They've LONG lectured us on militarism while it's been our military might that kept them free.

It's about damned time they paid their share, and then some. Also, we should be encouraging nations like Japan and South Korea to militarize.

Sometimes I wish there were a way to truly give people what they want. Merkel says 'go it alone,' then so be it.

It's like those people who jump up and down on TV and social media yelling "F the police!" We should note their name and address, and, y'know, put their information into a police database. When someone calls for help, and they're in the database, then they're on their own.

I have no problem with a plan like that.

“Free riders aggravate me,” he told me. [...] warned that Great Britain would no longer be able to claim a “special relationship” with the United States if it did not commit to spending at least 2 percent of its GDP on defense. “You have to pay your fair share...”

Completely irresponsible leadership on the foreign stage. Can you believe this guy?

right?

how can you demand that foreign leaders pay their fair share when you have free loaders at home who do not pay their fair share.

The 2% GPD is simply a guideline and Trump's not correct in saying that other countries owe us money. Believe it or not George W and Obama pressed nations to increase their contributions (not as boldly as Trump did). In 2014, countries not paying their 2% agreed to increase their spending for the first time in 20 years and 22 countries payed a higher % of their GDP than ever before. Merkel's comments were shocking imo as we are their strongest defense against Russian aggression. Apparently, Trump's speech and behind the scenes interactions made it seem like the other NATO members weren't quite sure if Trump was committed to Article 5.

Have the other countries been freeloaders off of us for so many years? Yes. I'll let the experts argue about Trump's strategy as I'm not sure of the economic situations of other European countries.

Really? But is it so bad that Trump wants to increase military spending? Your right wing propaganda does not square

Are you really saying we should spend less on defense?

Fresh off his first international trip as president, one in which he spent time at two meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter Tuesday that the U.S. relationship with Germany is “very bad for U.S.” and “will change.”

Both Trump and Merkel took part in meetings of NATO and G7 leaders held last week in Brussels and Sicily, respectively. While in Brussels, Trump reportedly told European Union leaders that “the Germans are bad, very bad,” a comment that forced Gary Cohn, the director of the national economic council to explain that the president was unhappy only with the U.S-Germany trade relationship, not the longtime American ally itself.
