BuffaloBud420
Nope...They can't run their show in isolation Every GM has final say on roster (unless in Buffalo). Fact. They scout all year and should. Some have little, some have alot of communication with coach. Depends. Edited May 1, 2017 by BuffaloBud420
White Linen
It's not all that crazy to me. Hey coach after a long and grueling process we've decided to draft Mitchell Trubisky. We have all the confidence in the world you and your staff will develop this young man into our future.
Thurman#1
Nope...They can't run their show in isolation The GMs need some help from the coaches as to fit, but there are plenty of situations where GMs make decisions without consulting coaches. Depends on the individual relationships, the hierarchy, etc. Edited May 1, 2017 by Thurman#
NoSaint
The GMs need some help from the coaches as to fit, but there are plenty of situations where GMs make decisions without consulting coaches. Depends on the individual relationships, the hierarchy, etc. Obviously it does depend but I agree that there's nothing wrong with the scouts and GM doing the work of the draft relatively solo (assuming you've had meaningful conversations about fit and scheme and all that in advance like you should be anyway)

Doc
I don't know if it can be said that MT would have been there at #3 anyway. It sounds like other teams were trying to trade up with the 49'ers as well.

White Linen
Poor kid got booed at the Bulls game the night after he was drafted Wow, that's crazy. Why would you take it out on the kid? He didn't pick himself. At this point you should just want him to feel welcomed and hope he proves worthy of the trade.

Ed_Formerly_of_Roch
Use to be this way. Now the new model is the HC hires the GM and it's someone he's very comfortable working with. This is the direction teams are going in these days. Sorry! That's how it normally is. GMs build rosters, coaches coach

timtebow15
Nice to see at least one organization worse than the Bills! The GM and coach should of course be on the same page in today's complex NFL. Maybe decades ago it didn't matter so much but it sure does now when some players fit much better into different systems. And don't say a coach should be able to change to match his players. That assumes the players are all built to play a certain style. That doesn't happen on accident. The Pats have a system and you best believe they don't change to fit players. They find players to fit their system. Its why Hogan is a normal player with the Bills and shines with the Pats. Who thinks the Pats would surprise Billichik with a pick? Plus trading down for that QB is stupid. I wasn't impressed with him at all but it is not his fault his was picked so the Bears fans should save their Boos for the GM. Once Brady is gone, we'll see what they do and don't have to change. And Hogan basically produced at the same level he did in Buffalo, if you adjust for how much more the Cheaters pass the ball than the Bills did.
