Until he drafted JP.

Who knows maybe JP didn't have the infamous "it" factor.

That worked out well with EJ which was a pick Whaley certainly

was onboard with. Whaley QB stable a few years ago with Tuel etc.

was downright scary. And his O line was laughable during that period

until cogs came along and t hey took,a huge chance that paid off. Kudos

Doug. Otherwise that year would the line once again would have been a joke.

Send Whaley back too the Steelers for a 7th. I doubt they would take him.

I don't think he's better than a average scout. Much less a dominate NFL

GM. I give him high marks on the quality porn emails he can send out though.

Nothing personal with Whaley but it appears he at this moment in Bills history

has very little power aside from a single vote in the group vote. That IMO

is not the average NFl GM.

the 2004 defense was really good, but it faced a wretched schedule and feasted on terrible competition. The 2014 defense faced a much tougher schedule.

Interestingly, the 2004 D was #1 overall in DVOA and the 2014 D was #2 overall in DVOA. I'll take either!

Me too! It just blows my mind that people who just want to hate on something can't even get credit for Whaley building a really good defense that year. We beat Rodgers without scoring an offensive td!

....OBVIOUSLY the neophyte owner Pegula, "a deer in the headlights newbee", blinded by the glitz and glitter of the NFL kept Whaley outta the goodness of his heart because he could NOT afford better......go figure......

I would like to address the issue of "Whaley not getting a QB" so I'll go through the drafts and see who was drafted. I'm not gonna do anything about free agency because if there is a good QB they don't usually go to a different team they get locked up on there team.

QB's drafted in 2013-14-Ej Manuel, Geno Smith, Mike Glennon, Ryan Nassib, Tyler Wilson, Landry Jones, Brad Sorensen, Zac Dysert, B. J. Daniels, Sean Renfree. This whole class is horrible and the Whaley was put in a bad place with having no QB coming in as the new GM and a pressure situation as a first year GM.

Here are the QB's drafted in 2014-2015-Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater (who looks like he might not even play again), Derek Carr (and unless we had taken him in the first round we really couldn't have made this pick), Jimmy Garrappolo, Logan Thomas (sound familiar?), Tom Savage, Aaron Murray, A.J. McCarron, Zach Mettenberger, David Fales, Keith Wenning, Tajh Boyd, Garrett Gilbert. Two players have come out of this and one doesn't look like he's gonna play again so really just Derek Carr has come out of that draft. I won't include Jimmy yet because he hasn't played a full season. 2015-16-Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota (Both of whom we obviously wouldn't have been able to get), Garrett Grayson, Sean Mannion, Bryce Petty, Brett Hundley, Trevor Siemian. Although we could have gotten Trevor he seems like a middle tier guy like Tyrod and we couldn't have gotten Jameis or Marcus unless we traded up which is not very likely. 2016-17-Jarred Goff, Carson Wentz, Paxton Lynch, Jacoby Brissett, Cody Kessler, Connor Cook, Dak Prescot, Cardale Jones, Kevin Hogan, Nate Sudfeld, Brandon Allen, Jeff Driskel, Brandon Doughty. I think we use hindsight willy nilly with these QB's. I don't think that anyone thought that these guys would be instant starters because the majority of them were drafted after round 2 or 3. If someone wants to go over the free agents that were missed at all during those seasons I would be grateful. GO BILLS!

Yeah but the game was lost because Bledsoe was a washed up has been. Donahoe was the guy who decided to pick up the washed has been.

No the game was lost because we could not set the edge against Willie Parker. The were just handing off repeatedly and we couldn't man up. It was Ajayi all over again.

Whaley seems to be just like another GM that came from Pittsburgh, Tom Donahoe. “Buffalo’s draft classes have produced inconsistent results, but Whaley has shown the ability to find talent in free agency. Daugherty mentioned Taylor in his blurb on Whaley and two of his most inexpensive additions last year, Lorenzo Alexander and Zach Brown, both had career-years with Buffalo.” http://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2017/04/buffalo_bills_doug_whaley_listed_as_worst_gm_in_league_by_rotoworld.html

Donahoe had terrible drafts, but had some good pickups in FA. So far, both Whaley and Donahoe have around the same results, both of which have produced only one winning season each 9-7, followed by numerous losing seasons. I think the Bills should stop trying to poach the Steelers organization for people to run theirs.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Manos take over if not after the draft then eventually

he is worse than donahoe... atleast donahoe knew the importance of the qb position

....EXACTLY.......his gem of a deal for Losman speaks volumes of Tom Terrific.....................

Actually I'm a Contract Manager and deal in negotiations. I know I would need the scouting experience. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what makes an NFL team successful. A good QB, a good O-line to give him time in the pocket. At least two quality WR's.

and a defense, you're hired !!

Wasn't Monos brought in by Whaley?

not sure , but wasn't Whaley brought in by Donahoe ?

I think Manos came from Philly so at least that would break the Pittsburgh curse

Whaley was brought in by Buddy Nix. The plan was for Buddy to teach Doug how to become a GM and then hand over the reins.

....and the ONLY correlation between Whaley and DonoHOLE is the Pittsburgh connection.....DonoHOLE's ego demanded that RW name him El Presidente, the FIRST in franchise history.....then Tom Terrific proceeded to be in complete control of ALL personnel matters and hired subordinating greenhorn HC's who would cave to his ego.....I WILL sign/draft the players and YOU WILL make it work....and we get Greg "Airhorn" Williams at a whopping 900k/yr, etc...far more of Steelers' GM Colbert rubbed off on Whaley versus DonoHOLE...so even though Kevin has been their GM since 2000, we can entertain a 30+ page thread trashing his sorry azz....stay tuned..............

Yes, but Parker ran for 102 yards in that game. Ajayi ran for over 200. James Harrisons strip sack of Bledsoe with the Bills only down by two that resulted in a TD was a major turning point. The strip sack occurred because Bledsoe was a washed up statue who was incapable of making plays in 2004. I know that I'm slightly digressing from the topic. I'm just making the point that both Bledsoe and Losman were what really did Donahoe in. Edited by DriveFor1Outta5

In terms the Donahoe era held this team back and it still hasn't rebounded.

I agree to an extent, but with a couple good drafts you can turn things around quickly in the NFL. The real problem is that everyone who has followed Donahoe has been no better.

Do you ever post anything with real facts? Whaley has one less win than in a full year less than TD.

But you like his white hair so clearly he's better.

Might not be just his "white hair" he likes.

Whaley's connection to the team was Russ Brandon, and he tasked Buddy with teaching DW the mechanics of running the GM position.

As to Donohoe, I didn't much like him, but his lack of success might have had more to do with Ralph Wilson's meddling even as his mental acuity declined.

Think of that one yourself?

You are telling us you are qualified to do Jim Overdorfs job. He is the contract wizard. We have the line sans the RT. What scheme are we running. Who out of the millions of free agents will fit with the system. Whaleyd job is to be a go between. Listen to what the coach wants evaluate the best fits and bring them in to talk to the money guys. They dont run his scheme he is the man who goes out to get his coach the best of the kind of players they need.
