They always say next year's QBs are going to be good. They don't always say "better," in years when there's an Andrew Luck coming out for example, but they say "good" every year. Those guys haven't gone under the draft microscope yet.

Please cite some specifics of how it has "worked out great".

 

From my vantage point, what has worked out great is the throwaway 6th round pick on Tom Brady. I do not think that the Pats' drafts have been that great beyond Brady and Gronk.

 

Having the GOAT QB covers a LOT of weaknesses and Bellichick is THE master at finding players that aren't very good in other schemes and making them work - especially in his defense.

 

What NE has done well is trading picks in round n this year for picks a round earlier the following year (e.g. This year's (late) second for a first next year). How many fans and reporters (opinioners) would melt down on the Bills for such a deal? (They need help NOW, who will play THIS year? They will probably mess up the extra 1st next year anyway. But the drought...)

 

 

Just want to point out that Brady was not drafted with a throw-away pick. Just the opposite, actually, he was drafted with a supplemental pick. And the Pats have consistently done their best to amass supplemental picks and extra picks of any kind in any way they can.

 

And while the kind of trade you're talking about is something New England has done, it's certainly not the only kind of trade they've worked. They consistently trade for extra picks even in they pick they get isn't a round higher.

No, your point very much does not stand.

 

Many to most thought Kaaya, for instance, was going to be really good. One of these mocks from last year had Kaaya going #1. I personally like this quote, "When Kaaya turns pro, he will likely be labeled NFL-ready because of his throwing mechanics, footwork, ability go through his progressions and accuracy. These traits will help him make a smooth transition." Watson was widely known and highly thought of before the season.

 

Baker Mayfield, who went into the season having completed 68.1% of his throws and put together 36 TDs and 7 INTs was mentioned a lot, though his height was also mentioned a lot.

 

Two or three had Kaaya and Watson as #1 and #2 and four guys in the first round. One had Watson and Kelly as #1 and #2.

I wouldn't mind moving back for more draft pick but I want the picks to be in this year's draft not 2018. So I put no in the poll

Since they blew it up and are starting over in rebuild mode (again), might as well trade back and get as many picks as they can. Since this season is shot before it starts, go Browns on it and grab one of the three QBs next year. This is a team that needs all the rookie talent it can trap in WNY for the 4 or 5 years of a rookie contract.

 

Free agency dribbling backup talent in the front door but flowing starter talent out the back door is a real weakness of poorly located and managed 3rd tier NFL franchises. Therefore, the draft is everything; need 8-9 picks every year. Trade back and draft well. then pray 3 or 4 rookies can start within a year or two every year. You might just scratch out a winning season every third season or so before the coaching staff / schemes/ roster gets flushed and you start all over again. The draft is key.

I voted Yes, because I believe it makes the most sense for them this particular year - but the "Yes" of course hinges on getting value for that trade back, i.e. the right Draft / Player picks in return. So, presuming those factors correlate, I am in favor of the trade back scenario and in fact believe it is THE strategy to have for this Draft (is possible).

Of course most fans are hoping a trade down deal comes through. Obviously we need to find a partner willing to give us a good deal. We have no 4th pick. It's a deep draft for db's. There will be very good players there between 12-18. And finally TT's restructured deal is hardly a ringing endorsement to his long term position with the Bills. Maybe we take Watson, Trubisky or Mahomes @ 10? But I think at least 1 of these 3 qbs will be there between 12-18....trade down at all costs...we desperately need more picks.

This isn't Madden. You can't just say "I want to trade my pick" and then automatically make it happen, there has to be another team that is willing to trade up to take your pick, and pay the price you are asking for.
