I also wonder about where Mauricio slots in. TBH I haven't watched much over the past month but from what I saw he looks like a legit MLB hitter - which makes me think he has a questionable glove? Pure speculation on my part with nothing to back it up other than questioning why he wasn't brought up sooner.

Baty looks like a guy that's gonna have to be a big plus at the plate cuz to me he looks uninspiring in the field.

I was just telling wifey that it's amazing how much a Bills win changes my mental state - especially one like today's.

I think Mauricio's future is partially tied to Baty's development. If Baty pans out as the 3B then Mauricio is the 2B. If Baty bombs then Mauricio assumes the mantel at 3B. While I am not sure of Baty at this point, I have a hard time not seeing Mauricio on the roster to start the season. Baty is going to have to have a helluva off season and Spring Training, IMO. I wouldn't mind seeing him play winter ball.

Agreed. But I also wonder if Vientos factors in similarly.  I think Vientos showed as much at the plate as Baty but with less of a chance.

IMO, the only path forward for Vientos is as part of a DH platoon. I don't see a position for him other than to occasionally spell the regulars at 1B or 3B.

A very sort of pass the work day exercise for me.  I’ll probably watch very little or none of the baseball playoffs.

But I’m wondering if you guys have a memory of a Mets team that missed out on making the playoffs because of 3 Wild Cards now and coulda done damage.

I was in 8th grade but I remember the 1997 Mets were a fun team.  Under this new format the 98, 07, and 08 teams woulda make the playoffs.  But they were kinda coming apart at the seams by the end of the year.  And the 2021 Mets didn’t do much in the playoffs

So I’d go the 1997 purely on memory without analyzing it too much.  I mean the Marlins won that year

I tuned in for a few minutes of the Marlins @ Philthies game in the 7th. Wheeler had been owning them up until that point and exited after 6 2/3 and allowing a run that inning with runners on base. It still irritates me that the 'Coupons' let him walk. His contract was not outrageous and he would be a very good two or three for the Mets right now.

A little before your time @Another Fan but the only teams that come to mind for me might be the Davey Johnson teams of the mid-1980s. It's still disappointing that those squads only won a single World Series. The 1985 team was really, really good but finished 3 games behind a 101 win St. Louis Cardinals team:

1984: 90-72 (2nd in NL East)

1985: 98-64 (2nd in NL East)

1987: 92-70 (2nd in NL East)

I would've gone with the '85 team too. That team wasn't all that different from the '86 team. Gooden was much more dominant in '85, but the '85 team didn't have Ojeda or Kevin Mitchell - on the other hand the '85 team did have Calvin Schiraldi.

And @ExWNYer - if you want to lament a guy that got away, how about Kevin Mitchell? Supposedly they dumped him because he was a bad influence on Doc and Darryl.

Yeah, that was laughable. Doc, Daryl, Keith, 'Nails'...they were all cokeheads &/or booze hounds. 'Kid' & Knight were about the only 'holy rollers' of the bunch.

I thought Mookie was a clean living guy.

Yeah Davey J was before my time but would you agree Bobby V got more out of his teams than Davey did?

You're right about Mookie. Sorry, I should have included him.

I like Bobby V but I don't know that he was a better manager than Davey Johnson. DJ was tasked with keeping all of those massive, partying egos in check & on task and he does have the 1986 Championship on his resume. Nobody since him has one, including BV. If one wanted to argue that Bobby V "got more out of his teams", I don't think I would argue that point. It's a valid thought and certainly open for debate. They were both good in their own right. Bobby certainly gets the edge in moustaches. 😉 😂

I am mentally preparing myself to say goodbye to Pete Alonso.

He just hired Scott Boras to be his agent.

I am sick of this douche ruining baseball and I really hate the 10+ year mega deals.

I realize that it’s part of the game now and that Cohen has bottomless pockets with no salary cap … but I just hate Boras.

I think we may have seen the last of Pete in a Mets uniform.

On an unrelated note - looks like Counsel is the favorite to replace Buck.

That would be a great hire, IMO.

Did you ever read The Bad Guys Won by Jeff Pearlman?  It chronicled the 1986 team.  That’s where a lot of my knowledge of them came from.

In my opinion it came off a little on the tabloidish side but a decent and quick read

Only hesitation I’d have on Counsel is he doesn’t exactly strike me as a New York kind of guy.  But I agree he knows his stuff

Yeah read this

Alonso is better and younger than Judge - and actually plays most of every season.

Also younger, better and more durable when Harper got his deal.

Pete is gonna make some money.

Mets would be asinine not to trade him, IMO.  Coming off another great year and healthy.

They could land an impact player AND top prospects.

I agree with all of what you wrote, Gugs. I thought Stearns' comments at his presser on Monday about Alonso being with the team next season or in their plans next season seemed a little inauspicious. It wasn't, "Yeah, signing him to a long-term deal is one of our priorities this off-season". That coupled with the reports during the season that they were fielding offers for him and now with him hiring Boras, the writing may be on the wall. We'll see. I hope he stays with an extension. If Cohen really wants him he'll pony up the shekels but, either way, Pete is gonna get his bag. If they don't see him in their long-term plans, they'd be foolish not to deal him at the Winter Meetings and maximize their return. Power hitters like him don't grow on trees and God knows they don't for the Mets. If he goes, it will be a shame because I think he will shatter every record in team history by a position player (other than batting average), if he stays.

Agree 100% on Boras. I know his clients love him because he is maximizing every penny they get but he is a scumbag, IMO, and I have never liked him.

On another note, I hope they sign the starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto from Japan and go all out for Ohtani. Shohei can fill a huge need at power bat, especially, if Pete is dealt or walks after 2024 and he'll be another high end pitcher in a year or so when he's ready to take the bump again.

So Eppler walks away unexpectedly today. It seemed fishy when I first heard it and now it's come out that Mets are under investigation  by MLB for improper use of the injured list.

The other tidbit that came out was a rift between Buck and Eppler over the use of Vogelbach - with Buck questioning why he was still on the team after the trade deadline.  This makes me happy that Eppler is gone - it also might partially explain why Vientos didn't get more playing time.

BTW, completely agree with comments about Boras. And while I can't stand the long term deals either, Pete is the type of player that I'd give one to.  If we let him go I'm gonna start hating on Stearns.

I have made no bones about it regarding my feelings for Billy 'Eppler-lectic fit'. You guys know I was not a fan. I was ambivalent about Buck going but am pleased about Eppler going. Clean sweep. Now start proving what you can do Wunderkind Stearns & Uncle Steve.

Are you fellas paying any attention to the post season? By and large I'm not, but I tuned in a little today.

Braves/Phillies is a death or boola-boola scenario for me. If you don't know the joke, death sounds better than boola-boola until you find out that it's death by boola-boola.

There's an outside chance we'll get a Scherzer/Verlander matchup next series. I'll refer back to death or boola-boola.

With nothing left to cheer for I turned on D'Bags/Dodgers. I'm rooting for the D'Bags. In the 3rd inning the Bags go yard 3 times. Another D'bag hits one but it gets over-turned on replay (foul) - and on the next pitch he hits it out!  #LFGBags!!!

Nice post, agree with everything. Watching our two hated NL East rivals playing to advance is like being asked if you'd rather be shot or stabbed. Whenever I think I might want one of them to win over the other, I throw-up a little in my mouth (sorry if you're reading this over breakfast). Boola-boola everyone! I'm 'ride or die' at this point with Arizona. I can't stand either of the other two NL teams still battling...or Houston who is now in the ALCS for a seventh consecutive year (gimme a break)...and there is no way I'm pulling for Scherzer to get another ring. Bring it, Snakes!

The possible prospect Scherzer v Verlander gives me the heebie jeebies, as well. Seriously, baseball gods?

Last night was the second...maybe third time...I've flipped on this season's playoffs. When did I turn on the game? It was the bottom of the second at 0-0. I decided to hang around for the third and was treated to the D-backs HR barrage in the bottom of the inning. If you watched, you literally witnessed history being made. Ron Darling said that it was the first time in MLB history that four HRs were hit in the same inning. Wow, was that something to behold. The "BEAT L-A!!!" chant by the Arizona crowd was the icing on the cake. And hitting the fourth HR immediately after the previous pitch was declared a HR down the rightfield line only to be overturned (and rightfully so) was something straight out of a Hollywood movie. Sooooooo, yeah...thank you for that, baseball gods. 😇

Turned on the game tonight in the hopes of seeing Max get lit up. Top 3rd and he's given up 4 runs so far. Good times.

Well the other side to that is I’m not sure how much of an anti Philly guy you are but they seem to be rocking and rolling

Id still root for them in the World Series over the Rangers (not that I’d watch an inning of it).  What probably influences my decision is really no contact with Phillies fans at all in my life
