Shead started 15 games for the Seahawks last season and played at a high level, but he tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee in the divisional round of the playoffs. Shead was originally a restricted free agent, but the Seahawks did not tender him, making him an unrestricted free agent. Shead, 28, also served as Seattle's special-teams captain last season. He has shown the versatility to play CB, safety and nickel during his time with the Seahawks. FYI: Hawks fans in comments not happy with this development
Brianmoorman4jesus Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 This is a pretty nice piece of news. Make it happen Doug. Then go get a WR that is better then a 5
Captain Murica Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Shead (knee) is doing well in rehab but isn't expected back for the start of the 2017 season, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. Shead had surgery to repair his torn ACL in January. It would take a near superhuman recovery for him to return for the start of the 2017 season, but the Seahawks are hopeful that he'll be able to play at some point during the year.
YoloinOhio Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 Was just going to say, he'd likely start out on PUP But good player
DanInUticaTampa Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Was just going to say, he'd likely start out on PUP But good player Might even need to head to IR. Worth picking him up though

Bills fans should be hoping more. Our GM is more prone to take on your lame and infirm... But, more seriously, the guy was good out here in the PNW. He would make a solid addition. Maybe even bring that Seattle rugby tackling technique with him?
H2o Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Whaley looking to "buy low" with him coming off of the injury? Likely a two year deal I would think as the offer.
Captain Murica Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Was just going to say, he'd likely start out on PUP But good player I agree, played on a defense that had swagger and an edge to them. Would be nice to have someone that could bring some of that to this team. I think there be a few here unpleased with his signing due to his injury and that he won't be completely ready for the start of 2017.
Pbomb Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Would fill another position of need to open up options in the draft
YoloinOhio Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 Good article from before the season. Apparently he's a decathlete. http://www.bellinghamherald.com/sports/nfl/seattle-seahawks/article94519522.html Shead is manhandling opposing receivers at the line. He has primarily played as an extra safety and special-teams mainstay from his arrival with Seattle in 2012 as an undrafted rookie free agent. He plays cornerback like a safety, a blend he says is easier for him because of his career as a decathlete. At safety, Shead said he has to know the whole picture: formations, plus the gaps and blocking schemes of offensive linemen in the run and pass games. Last season, cornerback Cary Williams failed to master the Seahawks step-kick technique of jamming receivers at the line. Strong safety Kam Chancellor missed the first two games holding out, then was injured for others. Free safety Earl Thomas was never fully healthy because of a shoulder injury. So Shead made five starts at cornerback and one at strong safety. Sometimes, he would play one series at strong safety, another at free safety and then the next series at right cornerback. You can count on one hand or finger how many players in the league do that. Then again, few if any NFL players have been a competitive decathlete. It helps a lot, just in the transition, Shead said. In decathlon, you have to transition from one event to the next event within 30 minutes in a competition. Just the transition and changing of mindsets, techniques and abilities, I think it transfers on the field.
GETTOTHE50 Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Looks like they want to give multiple looks in the secondary with Hyde, and maybe this guy. Not a bad idea in this passing league.
DaBillsFanSince1973 Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 this could work out well. wait, the sky is falling...
Captain Murica Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 this could work out well. wait, the sky is falling... yup, the type of player McDermott likes. He can play Safety and CB.
YoloinOhio Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 Highlights from last season... watch him vs Edelman and pick off Brady http://www.youtube.com/embed/khM21WN-lMU
Bills of Boston Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 I'd love this if it happened.. hope we don't hear about early paperwork again
BigBillsFan96 Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 this would excite me. seems like a great fit.
Elite Poster Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 (edited) Why would he start on pup? It's 8 month rehab from January. That pegs us into August just in time for the season. I know all the articles say that but I guess I'm missing the timeline. Edited March 16, 2017 by Elite Poster
