always surprises me that someone internally doesn't take crazed dictators out quicker than this.

Most crazed dictatorships are organized so that the people most able to take out the crazed dictator are the ones who have the most to lose by him being taken out.

That and most are propped up by stronger countries who have a vested interest in keeping those dictators in power.

For example...Trump and Russia. :w00t:

Millions of American lives could be at stake as North Korea threatens to attack power grid

North Korea may very well have the ability to kill millions of Americans, without directly firing on U.S. soil. For the first time, the pariah country’s state news agency warned it could hit the U.S. with an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) onslaught, a threat that experts contend is both very real and comes with catastrophic consequences.

So how could North Korea pull off an EMP attack? A hydrogen bomb detonated at a high altitude would create an electromagnetic pulse that would knock out key infrastructure – namely prominent parts of the U.S. electrical grid.

The higher the bomb’s detonation, the wider the range of destruction. An altitude of just under 250 miles – around the orbit of the International Space Station – would annihilate electronics in majority of the mainland, including parts of neighboring Canada and Mexico, analysts have said. North Korea exhibited its capacity to reach such altitudes in satellite launches in both 2012 and 2016.

We civilians lose power for a few weeks, the US military does not. Best Korea would never survive the reprisal attack.

A lot more than a few weeks. There's not enough spare parts to rebuild the power grid, and not enough manufacturing capacity to build the spares, inside of a year.

NIKKI HALEY: No More Can-Kicking on North Korea.

Tensions are rising, stocks are falling, and pulses are quickening in the wake of North Korea’s sixth and strongest nuclear test. The Trump Administration has been quick to respond: on Sunday, after Pyongyang claimed to have detonated a hydrogen bomb, Defense Secretary James Mattis responded with a terse statement warning of a “massive military response” to any threat to the homeland. On Monday, President Trump said the Administration was weighing halting all trade with countries doing business with Pyongyang; the next day, he announced that Washington would sell “highly sophisticated military equipment” to Japan and South Korea.

At the Security Council, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is urging countries to support a last-ditch effort to choke off North Korea’s fuel supplies—or else. . . .

In other words, China and Russia may be willing to live with a nuclear North Korea if that leads to a weakening of the American position in Asia. And if the United States must learn to live with it, too, we should be strategizing for how we can do so without surrendering our strong standing in the region.

Too bad the last 3 administrations did so much can-kicking.

Can kicking would have been at least some effort.

If cities are down without power for more than 72 hours, the grocery stores will be empty. Most people in the cities don't have enough food to last more than a few days. Starvation will happen quickly in major urban areas. The damage to the grid would take months, if not longer, to repair. When they got the lights back on there would be millions dead - if not from starvation, then from mass unrest.

Yup.

This is one of those infrastructure problems that is easy to defend against... but when politics gets involved nothing is easy. Thus, we've let our electrical grid remain unprotected and dangling over the head of the citizenry like the sword of damacles. Let's not forget, an EMP is not the only way the power grid could catastrophically go down. We just had the largest X Flare in over a decade hit the planet earlier this morning...

Probably true, which is why Boyst Farms is my designated safe haven if/when shiit ever goes down.

and for those in NY I can tell ya where to go to.

If something were to happen my uncle who has more guns than a small army and cousins who probably triple that are coming

The EMP threat should justify severe trade sanctions against China.

A preemptive strike , China said would be war with U.S.

I really think China is saying one thing in public but giving N Korea the go ahead in private jmo

Not to worry, those of us here on the Canada border will join our best friends there. Amiright row_33 ?

If that missile were off target and affected Canada , every single Canadian would be welcome here .

Right after N Korea disappears from the face of the earth

I am a big fan of my American neighbours, way more than my Canadian ones. Just show up in Montreal and claim refugee status, seems to be the thing to do this year.

The U.S. population would have to be temporary refugees around the world till the grid is repaired.

As long as most of the U.S. ballistic missile subs survive , pay back will be a beach . That goes for China and Russia , as long as NATO stays with us.

How would the Canadians be able to differentiate between nuclear winter and Canadian winter?
