Tiberius Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Are you talking about, Kim, Clinton, or Trump? BEIJING — President Trump’s threat to unleash “fire and fury” against North Korea sent a shudder through Asia on Wednesday, raising alarm among allies and adversaries and, to some observers, making the possibility of military conflict over the North’s nuclear program seem more real. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/09/world/asia/north-korea-trump-threat-fire-and-fury.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=a-lede-package-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news
B-Man Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 NYT: "Trump’s Harsh Language on North Korea Has Little Precedent, Experts Say." "Little Precedent" ≠ no precedent, and, in fact, the "little precedent" is — in the historical scheme, very big.First, there was President Harry S. Truman, in 1945, demanding that the Japanese surrender or “they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth.”Second, there was Bill Clinton, in 1993: ... during a speech in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea that if Pyongyang ever used nuclear weapons, “it would be the end of their country.” Victor Cha (of the Center for Strategic and International Studies) said “I take Trump’s statement in the same spirit” as Bill Clinton's. It's “a message of deterrence, which is important now to avoid any miscalculation.” There are 2 other experts quoted in the article. One is Michael Beschloss who wonders if Trump "was impulsive." To be impulsive in making a statement like that would (of course) "be very much out of the history of the presidency on matters like this.... You don’t have presidents blurting out things when lives are at stake, and if that is what it was, it would be scary."Remember, what Trump said was: "North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening beyond a normal state and as I said they will be met with fire and fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before."Did Trump speak on impulse or with attention to precedent? My opinion is influenced by the phrase "fire and fury." There's alliteration, like Truman's "rain of ruin," and the phrase after the alliterative phrase is almost the same as Truman's. Compare Trump's "like the world has never seen" to Truman's "the like of which has never been seen on this earth." Trump then repeats himself, with a bit of variation. He says "the likes of which this world has never seen before," which gets closer to Truman. It's almost as if he was aware of his difference from Truman and decided to repeat himself to tighten the connection.

DC Tom Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Although Trump isn't careful with his words here's an interesting NYT article on July 1993 where Bill Clinton offered similar sentiment: http://www.nytimes.com/1993/07/13/world/clinton-s-warning-irks-north-korea.html On his weekend visit to South Korea, President Clinton warned that if North Korea developed and used an atomic weapon, "we would quickly and overwhelmingly retaliate." "It would mean the end of their country as they know it," he said. 'Rash Act' by U.S It lacks the apocalyptic imagery and demagoguery of Trump's blather, though. And that **** has always mattered. Even more so nowadays, with a population that loses its **** over street names and "treat people as individuals" screeds. hemma Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 I'm sure that Iran will also condemn Trump's naughty, naughty words.
Kelly the Dog Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Where is Dennis Rodman when the country desperately needs him?
Nanker Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Where is Dennis Rodman when the country desperately needs him? Reliving memories of him dry-humping Michael Jordan on the hardwood after winning the NBA Championship on a game-winning last second shot. I just so miss B. O. He would keep us safe. He had a pen and a phone and would never have allowed Kim Jung Mentally-Ill get nukes and missiles that could hit our country. Anybody thinking Trumpet is going to launch the Hellstorm on RNK by his own should think about the generals he has running the show. There have been plans to rekindle the Korean War ever since 1953. The North Koreans have never abandoned their desire to unify the peninsula. The western political powers took their eye off the ball and the feckless previous POTUS was more concerned about making Muslims proud of their contributions to NASA and providing sex-change operations to servicemen than in keeping the homeland safe. You may hate Trump's guts to the core, but he's in the big chair right now, and all of our dicks are in a bigger noose than what JFK put them in back in '62.
DC Tom Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 North Korea confirms Kim Jong-un´s marriage to Ri Sol-ju by Sam Kim Original Article That article is probably the first she heard of it. "End of their country as they know it" is not apocalyptic? No.

I agree that Barry's phone and pen was keeping us safe. It's a shame that Trump allowed Lil' Kim to start his ballistic missile/nuclear miniaturization programs at 12:01 pm EST on January 20, 2017. He should be impeached immediately and somehow replaced by Hillary or Nancy Pelosi! Just lay waste to their missile and nucular factories then send the Rock in to snap Kim Jun's neck. This stuff is easy. Screw The Rock. This is a job for Chuck Norris!
