Should we extend Sammy now?

I see your logic, climbing astronomical salaries.. even a buy low/sell high situation but with his health it would be a risky bet.

At this point I would wait and see if Sammy can actually complete an entire season without getting injured. We may not sign him at all if he has more injury issues next year.

With all this cap space we are freeing up, does it makes sense to get ahead of some of these contracts and eat the money now?

 

I know we aren't done in FA by a long shot, but I don't see there being many big contracts out there to give. We could extend someone like Sammy and still get some quality B players

They don't need to, they will pick up his 5th year option...I'm not even sure if they are able to extend him or if they have to pick up the option on the 5th year first due to the fact he is still on his rookie contract and was a first round pick.

Agreed, but if he makes it through this season relatively healthy, it'd be good to get ahead of the cap and sign him early next season.

He just has to stay healthy for us to truly know what we have. Fingers crossed he stays healthy and we get him the ball next year often.
