DC Tom Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 I have no time to write up the whole thing today, so: The Battle off Samar. A ridiculously overmatched task group of "jeep" carriers, destroyers, and destroyer escorts fended off the main battle line of the Imperial Japanese Navy and won one of the most unlikely naval victories in history. The Americans were so overmatched, that one shell from the battleship Yamato weighed more than the entire broadside of the American task group. Pay particular attention to the performance of the USS Johnson, which independently charged the Japanese battle line, and was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and her captain a Medal of Honor - both very well deserved. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_off_Samar

Very interesting. Can I assume you have read books on this subject besides what is posted on Wikipedia? I just watched a movie which can be found on-line for free, "The Admiral: Roaring Currents." A Korean Admiral, with 13 ships, takes on the Japanese Navy which has 330 ships. It is dubbed in English. I think I would have preferred sub-titles.

CBF capsaicin also helps people with burning mouth syndrome. they actually rinse with a mixture of tabasco and water to diminish the symptoms.

CBF there was talk on EITM in DC about spicy food and peppers .. a woman called in about cutting up peppers then a bit later getting frisky with her man. Lets say he had a Hot Rod Her lesson learned put a glove on it.
DC Tom Posted October 27, 2017 Posted October 27, 2017 Thanks, for this. Very interesting. Can I assume you have read books on this subject besides what is posted on Wikipedia? Oh, yes. Most of the books referenced on the Wikipedia page (including the raw battle reports and damage reports,) and then some. Hornfischer's book isn't my favorite, but it is good and readily accessible to the average reader. Willmott covers less of that specific battle, and more of the operational and command context of the entire 4-day Leyte battle. And Morrison's always a good read, given he had access to primary sources and wrote relatively contemporary to the battle (he may have even been with Third or Seventh Fleet at Leyte.) I'd actually intended to write a full description yesterday, but was just swamped at work during the day, and it was too late in the day when I got to it.

Just Jack Posted October 27, 2017 Posted October 27, 2017 This might be something for you all to learn regarding all of the September birthdays All of them are products of Christmas parties and New Years Eve celebrations. As to the October birthdays - your parents were slow to the punch or were snowed in for a week. Known that for years. Fun party game, find out what month someone's birthday is, then figure out why they were conceived. For instance, I was born in July, so I was either a Halloween party or early winter snowstorm.

I loved Hans Christian Andersen growing up, and bought an anthology of him for my niece when she was seven. Then didn't give it too her, because after re-reading them as an adult I realized "Hey, this guy is really !@#$ing morbid." Quite a few of his stories feature little girls dying.

I'd expect a lot more birth nine months after the annual tanking of St Paddy's Day....

It is amazing how many morbid stories get turned into children's movies.

CBF best move in hockey besides them realizing that benches should open INTO the players area instead of ONTO the ice surface, the Habs got away with a few well-timed wipeouts of the Montreal Maroons on a breakaway with that move.
