jeffismagic Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I have been wrong plenty. I thought Trent Edwards was the answer. But I based my view on what I saw, what he measured out at, and more importantly my projection of what I thought he could do. Obviously, I was completely wrong, but my view was centered around what i thought his future progression would be. Smarter fans than me (Alphadawg) had much better eyes than I did. At any rate, I like to think that I don't argue based on one-time anecdotes and emotion but rather on a stronger evidentiary basis. And it is frustrating to see tons of ill-informed, emotional takes that ignore the evidence that is in front of one's face (if one takes the time to dig a little bit). The punchline here is that the greatest DB coach of all time just paid this guy a ton of cash. I'll take his opinion any day. Don't beat yourself up on Trent. He had some potential until the Arizona game. That hit he took finished him.
thebandit27 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 OK, so do you want me to go watch all 16 games from last year, and post the 50 times or so I know that Gilmore ran from contact, didn't off blocks to even attempt to hold an edge, or gave less than 100% effort. Because there are many. So, while videos are cute and all, there are good and bad videos for almost every player in the league. Hell, Mario Williams even exerted maximum effort here and there, that probably ended up on YouTube. Maybe I could point out that for how great Randy Moss' career was, I can probably produce 25 videos of him loafing or not trying. The video isn't impressive. Neither was Gilmore last year. If you have them, yes. That would bolster your opinion. Or, in the very least, name a handful...should be remarkably easy given that there were 50 according to you...then tell me why those few plays should marginalize an entire season of excellent statistical play, let alone 5 years worth of top-level corner play. You're cherry-picking at best. I'm viewing a 5-year career as a body of work.
Chuck Wagon Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 this is the year of alternate facts, #feelings and snowflakes. So much special here It's really tough when attempts to have intelligent football conversation get drowned out by "Can't tackle, not worth it".
dave mcbride Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Busted coverage is a good reason to give up on the play and call out your teamates before the play is even over. the play was over. The received was 3-4 yards ahead of Gilmore and 4 yards from the EZ.
thebandit27 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Don't beat yourself up on Trent. He had some potential until the Arizona game. That hit he took finished him. Nope...he had his best game as a pro the very next game against SD. The idea that a concussion ruined him is a myth--it was a simple fact of opposing DCs taking away the few things he did well.
D. L. Hot-Flamethrower Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Hey that's my guy!! Step off!!! But yea I agree, he is going to be a star. I'm hoping he's the Big Splash later today.
boyst Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 It's really tough when attempts to have intelligent football conversation get drowned out by "Can't tackle, not worth it". he's the best tackler since Joe Montanna I can't wait for when we let Shaq Lawson to be let go. Will we argue he never got INT's?
thebandit27 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I'm hoping he's the Big Splash later today. I doubt it...Schefter indicated he'd be staying in the AFC South. Also, if they pay that guy big money when he (a) wasn't even a boundary corner, and (b) has 1 season of solid play, I'll be very unhappy.

He just wasn't that good.
dave mcbride Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Sure, Gilmore has talent and BB has 60 million in cap space, plus Brady. Make no mistake, I respect you as a poster but you are usually not so dismissive to those who disagree with your takes, and I have been reading your posts for many, many years. I hear you, and you know I love your takes even when I disagree. The attacks on Gilmore have brought out the curmudgeon in me!
CommonCents Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I'm hoping he's the Big Splash later today. Haha I would take back all the bad things I have ever said about Doug Whaley. Until of course he signs another FB, Trades up for an ILB, Resigns Lorax, Passes on Hooker. Wait a minute...if Porno Doug passes on Hooker I'm getting into the coach McD is making all the decisions camp.

3rdand12 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Good move for Pats and Gilmore. Still happy that Bills let him walk as he was not about to give the Bills any type of discount. simple as that
Don't stop billievein Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 If we go into next season with darby as our #1 it's going to be a looong season.
Chuck Wagon Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I think the only 2 guys left that would qualify as a "splash" are Jeffery and Hightower. God help me if this franchise tries to sell Riley Reiff or Jared Cook as a splash.
dave mcbride Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 (edited) Nope...he had his best game as a pro the very next game against SD. The idea that a concussion ruined him is a myth--it was a simple fact of opposing DCs taking away the few things he did well. I think both sides are right here. I used to think that the SD game obviated the claim that the AZ game finished him, but I think that a couple of things were going on: SD gave him a ton of short options and he hit all of them, going 25 for 30. When other teams didn't afterward, I do think that Wilson's crushing hit affected how he played. He was permanently rattled. It didn't show in the SD game because SD had the wrong game plan, but against other teams ... Edited March 9, 2017 by dave mcbride

The idea that a concussion ruined him is a myth--it was a simple fact of opposing DCs taking away the few things he did well. It finished him. He did play one good game after that but it's like dropping your iPhone in water and having it work for a few hours. He became so gun shy that he earned the nickname Trentative.
Bill from NYC Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I hear you, and you know I love your takes even when I disagree. The attacks on Gilmore have brought out the curmudgeon in me! I hear ya brother! Thank you. As I said, I don't think he wanted to be here. Neither did Clements and he didn't play so well after he left as I recall.
thebandit27 Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I'm more concerned with the future and I think he is an emerging player. From an experience perspective, that's possible, but he's never played the boundary full-time, and is only 1 year younger than Gilmore.
Lv-Bills Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 If you have them, yes. I can't do that, I have a job. I've already go sucked into this debate and have to stop. I believe the cherry picking was already posted here via video. Again, everyone from pee wee to pro has a highlight video. There are many instances where Gilmore has been called out, on film, and accused of lackluster effort. Where there's smoke, there's fire. It's well documented. He was awful last year, and nothing that I've seen elite out of him. Hell, he hasn't looked good since The Pettine and Scwhartz heat on the QB style defenses have been long gone for us. Too many people see it for it not to be true. That being said.......if there's one place......that he could have gone........that will help him thrive, he picked it. NE. Anywhere else, and you'd probably never hear his name again. He's obviously not stupid, he's in a good spot now, and he can't play like the turd teammate he's been the last few years on the field. If he was elite, he would have been a leader, not a blamer and quitter.
