Drunken Pygmy Goat Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) Hard to tell who "he" is. Is it Whaley, or Carpenter, that wouldn't be receptive? Either way, it's a non issue. My guess is that the coaches and FO already planned on releasing Carpenter for at least a couple weeks now. And Carpenter can work with whomever he wants on his time. I liked Carpenter. Before Rex was hired, he was the best kicker the Bills had ever had, percentage wise, and was very good from 40-50+ yards out. But it became pretty obvious that he wasn't the same player these last two years. Not sure why. I know he had an ankle issue before the 2015 season started, and Rex didn't exactly do a good job of instilling confidence in the guy, but letting him go was the right move. BillsfanAZ Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Just because Christie was a good kicker doesnt mean he can teach someone else to kick. Besides if Carp wanted help he can seek it in the off season.
george c Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) I personally feel Whaley is a horrific GM, and instances like this shows that this administration isn't willing to "turn over every stone". Edited March 7, 2017 by George C
Heavy Kevi Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Nothing would have stopped Carp from working with Christie on his own time. Right. If both Carp and Christie were open to this, it would have happened. You constantly hear about players working with ex-players, players on other teams, outside trainers, and ex-coaches. Nothing wrong with that, and nothing a GM can do to stop it. And I can understand Doug not wanting an outsider at a closed practice. And if I'm Carp, I might not want help from a player from a era past trying to change the way I do things. It's not like Carp is a rook or anything close to that. Idk what the reasons were, or who stopped it from happening, but I have a hard time believing they wouldn't get together if they wanted to.

Matt_In_NH Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I don't have an issue with Whaley turning him away, you can't accept help from every person who offers to be a coach. What is Christie's coaching history, who has he "helped" get out of a slump in the past? There is a chance he could have made things worse.
FreddieJizzle22 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I don't think this is a slam on Whaley at all.
kota Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 LOL. This is funny. There are coaches for a reason. It's nice to have former players who want to the help young guys but i personally believe that the coaching players receive during the offseason conflicts with what the coaches want during the season.
Nervous Guy Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 In the "update to this article": Christie had an opportunity to clarify, but his response seems to indicate that the “he” in the post is Whaley, not Carpenter. It’s possible that Carpenter was rejecting the help through Whaley, but from Christie’s perspective it would seem that Whaley was the one who shot the whole thing down. geez, this article is like a Rorschach test . What do you see?
JohnBonhamRocks Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Let's focus on who Hauschka wants as a coach
eball Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 With all due respect to the Whaley witch hunt, this really sounds like more of a "we have coaches for that" so unless Christie was simply volunteering his time out of the goodness of his heart I don't understand any outrage over this.
cd1 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Carpenter was not the complete package anyway. He was only good at extra points and field goals. The Bills had to carry aan extra kicker on the team for kick offs. MAYBE that situation was justified when Carpenter was "GOLD", but that product has tarnished and they can save $$$$$ by finding ONE guy to get the job done. Why on earth would you want to prolong this dog and pony show? There is enough real reasons to find fault with Whaley without feigning outrage at ridiculous things.
Pbomb Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Sounds to me like it was carpenter that didnt want the help. But just another great opportunity to hate on whaley for no reason. You already know almost every media member has two articles written about tyrod, one to bash whaley if they keep him and one to bash him if they get rid of him
liverpoolkev Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Saw this on twitter: http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2017/3/7/14841906/buffalo-bills-kicker-steve-christie-dan-carpenter-doug-whaley?utm_campaign=buffalorumblings&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter Steve Christie looked to help Carpenter with his kicking, but Whaley wouldn't let him. I'd like to wish the very best to Dan Carpenter and his future endeavors. It's not easy kicking in Buffalo! For the record, I did offer to help him, but was told by the GM that he wouldn't be receptive to outsiders. You would think after kicking there for nine years, l wouldn't be considered an outsider. But rather an experienced resource that was available to coach a fellow specialist in a time of need. Guys, I'm generally supportive of Doug, but stuff like this gives me pause. I think he's done a decent job drafting (when you think without Captain Hindsight with you, he did make choices that were understandable), picking up solid players like O Leary and J. Miller. But some of the stuff like this kind of concerns me. GMs should make efforts to improve their team, and treating your best kicker in team history as an "outsider" is really strange. I'll keep supporting the man, but stuff like this sticks with the fans. It will be interesting to see what this year's draft will do for his image. Some of the stuff like what ? Really? Christie has credibility ? I guess Carpenter didn't want the help either he had 4-5 yrs to get help from Christie. If coaches can't do their job ? replace them OMG you Whaley haters are unreal. Listen ; Wgr and that listening audience need to understand that he is not going anywhere period. The owners can see he is a very good talent evaluator period. With no salary cap he signed two pro-bowl players in Alexander & Brown off the heap... I wish the last 4 past GM's could have done that.

It was an overreaction on my part, I apologize
BillnutinHouston Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I also read this to mean the refusal was from Carpenter, not Whaley. But far be it from me to get in the way of a crusade.

Bolded pretty much puts the thread in a nutshell... Even if Whaley "blocked" this from happening, I don't really care nor do I think Christie would even have been able to make any type of marked difference.
