Roundybout Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Saw this on twitter: http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2017/3/7/14841906/buffalo-bills-kicker-steve-christie-dan-carpenter-doug-whaley?utm_campaign=buffalorumblings&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter Steve Christie looked to help Carpenter with his kicking, but Whaley wouldn't let him. I'd like to wish the very best to Dan Carpenter and his future endeavors. It's not easy kicking in Buffalo! For the record, I did offer to help him, but was told by the GM that he wouldn't be receptive to outsiders. You would think after kicking there for nine years, l wouldn't be considered an outsider. But rather an experienced resource that was available to coach a fellow specialist in a time of need. Guys, I'm generally supportive of Doug, but stuff like this gives me pause. I think he's done a decent job drafting (when you think without Captain Hindsight with you, he did make choices that were understandable), picking up solid players like O Leary and J. Miller. But some of the stuff like this kind of concerns me. GMs should make efforts to improve their team, and treating your best kicker in team history as an "outsider" is really strange. I'll keep supporting the man, but stuff like this sticks with the fans. It will be interesting to see what this year's draft will do for his image.
teef Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 i wonder if christie wanted a salary job as part of this? if he didn't, i don't know why you wouldn't let him help...unless they already knew dan was a thing of the past.
PromoTheRobot Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Even hear the expression "too many cooks?" How would you feel about an ex-employee offering to help you do your job?
billieve420 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) Well would Rex and existing staff think Whaley was meddling in their business since it was obvious there was friction between the two parties. Things like this are never clear cut. If Christie wanted to help Carpenter should have called him directly and offered him advice. Edited March 7, 2017 by billieve420
zow2 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Yeah that's lame of Whaley if that's how it went down. But let's be fair, Dan did a great job his first couple years in Southtowns weather, without any help from Steve Christie. His downfall most likely has nothing to do with how to kick in the Buffalo climate....

Nothing would have stopped Carp from working with Christie on his own time.
Elite Poster Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Hey I'm gonna help this guy on your team! We are going to cut him anyways, don't waste your time. Omg I'm so mad lemme make a public statement!!!!!
Hurricane Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 You have coaches to deal with this stuff. Exactly...
bobobonators Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I personally dont have a problem with this. I mean we hire coaches for a reason. By bringing in someone else we undermine the coach. Kickers are head cases imo. And Carp lost his edge.
Beast Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Would it have mattered? When Christie kicked here the stadium was much more open than it is now. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but Carpenter's issues weren't just during home games.
JohnBonhamRocks Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 The way I read it, I thought that what was said was that Carpenter was the one against outside help. It's written somewhat ambiguously.
YoloinOhio Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Makes perfect sense that they wouldn't bring in Christie for this. That's what coaches are for.
TheElectricCompany Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Even hear the expression "too many cooks?" How would you feel about an ex-employee offering to help you do your job? Yep, +1. Christie was a great player for years, but that doesn't mean he could be a great coach. This is a non issue. Typical offseason time wasting nonsense.
PromoTheRobot Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 The way I read it, I thought that what was said was that Carpenter was the one against outside help. It's written somewhat ambiguously. Obviously the OP thought this was a slam against Whaley.

Elite Poster Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 If you read the original post, it actually seems like Dan wasn't receptive to outsiders...
BillsFan2313 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Carpenter sucks. Move on. I don't give a damn if Christie wanted to help.
BrooklynBills Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 The way I read it, I thought that what was said was that Carpenter was the one against outside help. It's written somewhat ambiguously. That's how I read it also. I want Whaley fired yesterday, but I'm going to flame him for this.
Roundybout Posted March 7, 2017 Author Posted March 7, 2017 Obviously the OP thought this was a slam against Whaley. I did, my bad
