Sessions did not disclose two Russian envoy meetings

Recommended Posts

unless they come up with some evidence like they did with flynn its unlikely theres enough here to take down sessions. but it does do damage to the administration and makes any future revelations of trump team involvement from russia stick a little better. so this incident could indirectly lead to other even more damaging instances for the don prez

its pretty much just good old fashioned classic hubris. and its one of the best ways to torpedo yourself in executive politics

Horseshit. Flynn didn't get fired for talking with them. There was nothing wrong with talking to the Russians. He got fired for lying to Mike Pence.

Do we need any further evidence of why the conservatives and libertarians (and others) on this board feel free to laugh and call out the liberals when they get excited with the current "scandal" ?

From the "paper of record" and the source that all the mainstream media point to.....

Opinion: "We do not yet know all the facts, but we know enough to see that Attorney General Sessions has to go"

nyti.ms/2mPWA2B

I appreciate that they are no longer making an attempt to hide their bias "We don't know all the facts, but we made our decision anyway"

The desperation of democrats and the DC elite is palpable, and (amazingly) will only get worse as the administration starts passing a few more reforms.

On CNN, Sen. Dianne Feinstein describes meetings with Russian ambassador. 'I believe he's been in my office from time to time.'

c'mon..........it's like the democrats are trying to be funny now...............

CNN falsely reports Loretta Lynch recused herself from the Hillary Clinton email scandal http://washex.am/2mybO08

That's an incredible article. Painter's got big balls to put his name on that. Good for some laughs though.

One could argue that behavior bordering on perjury could be grounds for it being "time to go" regardless of the full set of facts.

Its not like this sort of political game hasnt been common among folks on the right for 25 years.

um, mcfly, thats what i meant, evidence that sessions talked about trump/election stuff. that should have been obvious, man

true but the democrats simply arent nearly as good at ginning up crap into full blown conspiracies. the republicans are absolute master craftsman at turning a completely nothing event into the biggest threat to human existence ever seen in the time of man

Goodbye Spin, Hello Raw Dishonesty

At this point it’s easier to list the Trump officials who haven’t been caught lying under oath than those who have.

The latest big buzz is about Jeff Sessions, the attorney general. It turns out that he lied during his confirmation hearings, denying that he had met with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign. In fact, he met twice with the Russian ambassador, who is widely reported to also be a key spymaster.
But let’s not focus too much on Mr. Sessions. After all, he is joined in the cabinet by Scott Pruitt, the Environmental Protection Agency administrator, who lied to Congress about his use of a private email account; Tom Price, the secretary of health and human services, who lied about a sweetheart deal to purchase stock in a biotechnology company at a discount; and Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, who falsely told Congress that his financial firm didn’t engage in “robo-signing” of foreclosure documents, seizing homes without proper consideration.
And they would have served with Michael Flynn as national security adviser, but for the fact that Mr. Flynn was forced out after the press discovered that, like Mr. Sessions, he had lied about contacts with the Russian ambassador.
nine months

Sessions could face legal ordeal over testimony

Lawyers say he's at greater risk if a special counsel takes over Trump-Russia probe

Even if Attorney General Jeff Sessions didn't commit perjury during his confirmation hearing, Sessions could still be in other kinds of legal trouble for failing to tell his Senate colleagues that he met the Russian ambassador on two occasions during the heat of the presidential campaign.
"It is, at best, very misleading testimony," said Richard Painter, formerly the top ethics lawyer in President George W. Bush's White House. "I don't go so far as to say that it's perjury, but there is a lesser charge of failing to provide accurate information to Congress."
"A nominee at a confirmation hearing has an obligation to provide full and complete information to Congress," Painter continued. "Conduct that might be just short of perjury in a deposition in a typical civil case is entirely inappropriate in front of Congress."

The point is he lied... and it sounds like others have... the Russian manipulation is a bigger issue... but not this one is about Sessions may have mispoke but his trip was paid out of one the campaigns during one of those meetings which makes his answer problematic for him. Otherwise this would be just noise and politics as usual.

Well sir, I would argue that anyone's interpretation of what "borders" on perjury is NOT enough for someone (of any party) to resign

Good to have you over here Larry, they need your help.

If being held in contempt of congress wasn't enough for Holder to resign, this certainly isn't enough to force Sessions hand.

And that may be, although calls for resignation dont necessarily clear a high bar before being sent out into the world.

Democrats are adjusting. And in defense of them, they're trying to feel out the best way to approach a very non-traditional public authority who has done/said some pretty concerning things. This is all part of it. Perhaps you think its histrionic, but I'm sure you recall the narratives back in 08-09 prior to the BBMB POLHAMMER being delivered unto all of our heads. Is it more ridiculous than the stories about Obama enlisting a Hitler-Youth-esque "army?" And not for nothing but the Democrats have been incentivized to strongly react to everything given the victories the right have achieved over the last 8 years or so. Republicans showed that blatant forced hysteria and ridiculous stories could yield electoral wins on a pretty consistent basis.

I think we're FINALLY approach something of an equilibrium point. Sessions has recused so this whole thing will run its course. Frankly, I'm a bit too cynical to think that even if an independent investigation were to reveal even more concerning things than we already *think* we know, the Trump constituency is unlikely to give it any consideration at all. This election took the conspiracy theory cognition mainstream. I think the middle ~20% may be fluid but Trump's baseline 35-40%? They're locked in, regardless of what happens.

Also, thank you for the welcome B-Man. Glad to be "back."

This McCarthy article is kind of ridiculous.

He's not wrong in that it would be a very difficult case to prove. Most perjury is. But a case being difficult to successfully prosecute doesnt mean that the case is devoid of merit. Unless Mr. McCarthy and similarly-minded folks would like to concede that the Clinton email investigation was also "meritless"

You seriously don't think this guy should be in charge of the investigation into Russian interference in the election? You are not that partisan are you?

The Russians did not interfere with the election.
