The Media's Portrayal of Trump and His Presidency

Donald Trump and the Ministry of Truth

At noon, President Trump spoke to a VFW convention in Kansas City and told the crowd: "Just remember, what you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening."

Observers quickly pointed out that the American president's syntax was uncomfortably close to an infamous line from George Orwell's "1984:" "The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

In "1984," the Ministry of Truth is dedicated to teaching citizens to accept sinister nonsense, like 2+2=5 and War is Peace. The test of a loyal party member is "a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary."

In other words, the test of loyalty is not only to lie for the regime but to convince oneself to believe the lies, or at least to dismiss any meaningful difference between truth and lies. And that's where the real danger with the hyper-partisan defense of Trump is emerging.

So sayeth the news organization pushing the narrative "But we've always been at war with Russia."

THE WASHINGTON POST’S IDEA OF A “GOOD SUMMER” FOR SOCIALISTS

Here are the first two paragraphs of a front-page Washington Post story by Dave Weigel:

It has been a good summer for the Democratic Socialists of America.

On June 20, members of the organization’s Metro D.C. chapter confronted Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at a Mexican restaurant downtown, chasing her out and making national news.

Let that sink in.

Can you imagine the Washington Post saying this about a far-right group that had chased, say, Eric Holder out of a restaurant, thereby “making national news”? I didn’t think so.

Weigel is, and always has been, a nasty piece of work. Thus, it’s not surprising that he would tout chasing a public official out of a restaurant as evidence of “a good summer.”

But the Post still has editors, I think. And the Post hired Weigel despite his history.

Keep this mind the next time, following an instance of aggressive conservative activism, the Post tut-tuts about the breakdown of civility in our politics. And keep in mind Weigel’s history of such tut-tutting, as when he accused conservatives of using the media to “violently, angrily divide America.”

In Weigel’s world, when conservatives get angry, they are violently dividing America. When leftists act out their anger, they are having a “good summer.”

Well...last summer was a good summer for Unite the Right.  They killed an Antifa terrorist in Charlottesville.

Yeah...can't see the Post saying that.

The Washington Post conflates Story Daniels and Karen McDougal in order to call Trump a liar.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/factcheck/once-again-‘fake-news’-decried-by-trump-turns-out-to-be-true/ar-BBL4lPH?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=HPCOMMDHP15

When the Wall Street Journal first reported just before the 2016 election that the company that owns the National Enquirer agreed to pay $150,000 to a former Playboy centerfold model for her story of an affair a decade ago with Trump — but did not publish it — Trump’s spokeswoman Hope Hicks was quick to dismiss it. “We have no knowledge of any of this,” she told the WSJ, adding that Karen McDougal’s claim of an affair with Mr. Trump was “totally untrue.”

Hicks’s statements to the media were often dictated directly by Trump.

But that denial of knowing anything about the transaction was rendered false by the release July 24 by Cohen’s attorney of a recording of a conversation two months before the election between Trump and Cohen, secretly made by Cohen.

“Um,” Cohen says, “I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend, David,” which is potentially a reference to David Pecker, president of American Media Inc., which owns the National Enquirer. Cohen mentions that he had “spoken to Allen Weisselberg [of the Trump Organization] about how to set the whole thing up” and Trump asks, “So, what do we got to pay for this? One-fifty?”

In other words, not only was Trump aware of the payment by AMI, he even knew the figure.

Similarly, when Trump in April was asked whether he knew about a $130,000 payment to pornographic film star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence, arranged by Cohen, the president denied any knowledge of it. (The WSJ also broke that story, which included this Cohen statement about whether Trump had an affair with Daniels: “President Trump once again vehemently denies any such occurrence.”)

“No. No. What else?” Trump said in response to questions about the Daniels payment, saying that he did not know about it when it was made and that he did not know where Cohen got the money. “Well, you’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. And you’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. … No, I don’t know. No.”

Cohen had also claimed he acted on his own. “In a private transaction in 2016, I used my own personal funds to facilitate a payment of $130,000 to Ms. Stephanie Clifford,” Cohen said in February. “Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly.”

He continues to do this kind of posting. I really don't think he does know better. It's like he never learns.

He claims to be an "Independent" but in nearly every post he makes there's at least a whiff of liberalism or disapproval of Trump.

they praise themselves for being "independent" but they cannot be if they have any interest in political discourse.

if you aren't conservative you are liberal.

certain mindsets think they have invented something new, they take great pride in it

political philosophy has been well documented and argued for over 2000 years now, but they think with 2 seconds of hate for Trump they have discovered something new

On the heels of Facebook plummeting:

Jack @ Twitter is sweating.

I hope so as he should be.

With all the "improvements" on Twitter the last 6+ months, I have basically stopped using my account.  I looked at it the other day and saw I lost four or five hundred followers, so I cannot be alone (and who wants to follow a (basically) dormant account anyway?)

I know all social media is a business, but there is a certain amount of quid pro quo involved... I create content and allow it to be shared, you (the social media) allow it to get through.  Google (YouTube) and Pinterest are search engines that target based on past participation by the user (some say spying in the case of browser history). They weed out the best content to share based upon usage and algorithms. If Twitter and Facebook did something similar, there would be no need for shadow-banning,  people would be happy with their feeds (no one follows someone or a brand to NOT see what they are sharing), and more ads might be clicked (as businesses, I can definitely see pushing ads).

As it stands, #walkaway is a real thing going on with so many people vis-à-vis socials these days.
