The Media's Portrayal of Trump and His Presidency

Tonight was made for Twitter.

Rachel Maddow gets a copy of Trump's 2005 Tax return. Does a special "Al Capone's Vault." Everyone waits breathlessly. And she reports that he earned $150M, paid $35M in taxes legally, and basically everyone at MSNBC looks like a complete dumbass.

Twitter is so hysterically funny right now. People are suggesting Trump leaked his returns to get the conversation off the CBO report.

Wouldn't surprise me.

BEST. MELTDOWN. EVER.

Keep up the good work, leftists.

I read on twitter that it said "client copy" though I haven't seen for my own eyes.

Norm Macdonald is funny as hell tonight. He usually does a twitter play by play of golf. He's been doing the same thing/style with Maddow and it's hysterical. I think #alcaponesvault is trending.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow took so long to get to the big reveal of Donald Trump’s 2005 tax return, we had time to catch it on The Daily Beast while we waited.

Daily Beast contributor David Cay Johnston has obtained what appear to be the first two pages of Trump’s 2005 federal income tax return, and published an analysis of those pages on his website,
. The Daily Beast could not independently verify these documents.

There’s a whole lot of yawn

The documents show Trump and his wife Melania paying
$5.3 million
in regular federal income tax—a rate of less than 4% However, the Trumps paid
an additional $31 million
in the so-called “alternative minimum tax,” or AMT. Trump has previously called for the elimination of this tax.

What that shows is Donald Trump paid a hell of a lot of money in taxes in 2005.

And not much we didn’t know from his prior released 1995 return:

Trump’s 2005 return also shows that he’d continued to benefit from the roughly $916 million loss he reported in his 1995 return—
. Using a loophole Congress closed in 1996, Trump converted that loss into a tax credit for the same amount he could offset against income.

But Maddow decided to go full sail down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole before announcing what was already on the internet.

DISPATCHES FROM AL CAPONE’S VAULT: All of Twitter breathes deeply into paper bag, searches for angle on Rachel Maddow’s tax return tweet.

Also at MSNBC tonight, in mammoth case of projection, lack of self-awareness, or a yuuge quantity of chutzpah

Brian Williams Chastises White House for Creating ‘Alternative Universe.’

Gee................I seem to remember someone was suspended from his job for lying (?)

Rachel Maddow’s career committed suicide live on national TV tonight

Rachel Maddow has a history of claiming big scoops which then flop.

There was the debunked 2012 big scoop about supposed GOP wrongdoing in Michigan. And the 2014 big scoop that the Koch Brothers were behind Florida groups pushing drug testing for welfare recipients, which was not true.

What pisses me off about the tax reporting is they insist on saying that Trump paid a tax rate of 4% but AMT bumped it up to 24%

That means that the effective tax rate is 24% not 4%. But no, the reporting isn't slanted.

Rachel Maddow=Candy Crowley=Dan Rather

She did a number on her own personal career last night with that spectacle.

I think the same thing will happen with this obsession with the Russians. They will investigate Trump and find only evidence of Democrats, especially the Clintons, doing what they think Trump did.

I doubt Maddow did any damage to her credibility at all with this. MSNBC isn't as much about news & information as they are maintaining a narrative. As long as you display contempt for Trump, all is forgiven.

I agree. As a journalist Maddow really tripped over her own dick on this one. But that would assume she was a journalist rather than host of an hour long Prime Time Democrat Infomercial

I can't understand why they would continue to report on his taxes when it debunked everything they were saying about him. Did they not read the tax returns before presenting them or did they want to be fair?

Because the story isn't his taxes, it's that he didn't release them.

I appreciate the sarcasm, but...he still hasn't released them, and he allegedly didn't release them because they showed he paid no taxes and had ties to Russia +/- other foreign governments.
