dave mcbride Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 (edited) This suggest that they are not. I know many feel that they are talented, but with only one player ranked in the top 100 -- at #98 (Incognito) -- this sorta confirms my belief that their talent level is highly overrated by many fans. I realize that a strong argument can made for McCoy being on this list. https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-top-101-players-from-the-2016-nfl-season/ (Also, note that Jason Peters is still pretty dominant.) Gugny Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 First ... I'd say the Bills are moderately talented. Secondly, the fact that McCoy isn't on the list makes the list pure crap.
TSOL Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 (edited) I think the Bills have some individual talent but are not a talented team. We dont play as a cohesive unit... Edited February 11, 2017 by Lex Lyon

Secondly, the fact that McCoy isn't on the list makes the list pure crap. The list is the opposite of crap. It's well thought and applies real metrics. It doesn't mean it's 100 percent correct, however. I'm guessing you didn't read it ... Edited February 11, 2017 by dave mcbride

Normally I like PFF but any list that doesn't have Shady, Beasley, Earl Thomas and Patrick Peterson in their top 101 player is just wrong. Brandon Graham is at 9 but Vic Beasley isn't in the top 101? This list is terrible. PFF is far too subjective in their analysis. The Bills talent has been there but it's getting older and injured. They were a more talented team the last few years than I suspect that they will be this year. I don't see the talent on the rise with the exception of Sammy and Shaq. The majority of the guys I see regressing not progressing. Edited February 11, 2017 by Kirby Jackson

There was a supplemental article with noteworthy names that didn't make the cut. They said Shady didn't make it because of his pass protection.

Explaining Thomas's absence is easy -- he missed half the season.

But for 5 RBs to make the list (all great), and Shady not to make it ... that's crazy. The fact that Shady was able to achieve the success he did in a painfully predictable offense that included zero passing threat, should have put him in the top 50, at least.

jeffismagic Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 The Bills best two players, Sammy Watkins and Marcel Dareus, have been injured or suspended. In Dareus's case Rex decided he would play nose tackle instead of attack the QB. In Watkins case he has constantly been injured and even when healthy the Bills never throw the ball to him. Kyle is one of best players but he is nearing the end and could retire soon. Our best corner could be leaving in free agency and our best safety also could retire. No, at this point we don't have enough.

Explaining Thomas's absence is easy -- he missed half the season. That is kind of why PFF is so flawed. Beasley is bad against the run but leading the league in sacks more than offsets it. He was top 5 in pressures. They held back Shady because of blocking. They weigh skill sets equally that aren't necessarily of equal importance. I'm surprised that they didn't hold Brady's rushing stats against him. It's a flawed model. WAR in baseball and PER in basketball are much better at analytics.

dpberr Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 Talented, yes. Talent is like energy, however. The IT is about turning potential to kinetic. That's where the separation exists.

That is the biggest positive from Rex being gone. If Dareus doesn't drag race and smoke the synth he could be a beast again.

Discipline thats all. IDC if he smokes the real good green ****. As long as he finds away to pass his tests and get on the field and perform at a high level its all good.

Re Beasley, i hear you, but it is the case that the Falcons defense was terrible, and especially bad against the run: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef PFF is okay compared to the alternatives and typically I think that they do a pretty good job with the OL. It is just a bit subjective. If I understand their process they basically watch every play of a particular player and grade it. The problem is that there are so many other moving parts (scheme, talent around them, score, down and distance, etc...) in addition to varying opinions on what was good or bad. They certainly have some players that they like and others that they don't. It is a decent tool but has some serious flaws.
