Trump To Begin NAFTA Redo

You guys need to understand Trump. He is a negotiator by trade. He is going to ask for more than what he is willing to accept. Understand and take his words with a grain of salt when he is addressing specific deals. Just step back and judge by the results rather than his initial rhetoric.

But what about the fact he will lie about the final results?

GOODBYE, TPP...

Meetings with execs, labor leaders...

U.S. manufacturing exports to Canada and Mexico, the United States' two largest export markets, increased 258 percent under the agreement, according to the website of outgoing U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, and the deal helped create a trade surplus in agriculture and manufactured goods.

Wow, what a disaster

You're not trying to make a point, you're just a jerk.

Interesting situation regarding the application of NAFTA:

http://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/16/us/politics/nafta-united-states-canada.html

Summary:

  • American company goes into Canada and wants to open a quarry, and makes the application to the Canadian government to do so,
  • Canadian government reviews the application and rejects it, saying that the quarry "should not be permitted to proceed because it would have a significant and adverse environmental effect on the “community core values” of the [area around the quarry]"
  • American company goes to NAFTA arbitration panel and complains
  • NAFTA arbitration panel rules for the American company and against Canada, saying that the "community core values" discriminate against outsiders and can't be used against Americans
  • NAFTA arbitration decisions cannot be overturned or appealed
  • American company is now using NAFTA to get $443,000,000 in damages from Canada
