Besides the social costs, there is just diminishing returns on them nowadays. There are just too many other opportunities to gamble elsewhere that I doubt a casino would bring in many tourists. So you basically just attract the people from the Rochester area, essentially praying on your own citizens. Now if more casinos in this state would mean that we got rid of the lottery I would be all for it. 255555[/snapback] Yes. Indiana has casinos on the Ohio River in proximity to SW Ohio and Northern KY. They've been in operation for seven or so years. Most of the receipts are local, and so far they've pulled over 3 Billion dollars out of the area - money that would have been spent in the local economy. Gambling casinos are "negative tourism". Gavin in Va Beach Posted February 28, 2005 Share Posted February 28, 2005 One of these days a city is actually going to get wise and instead of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic they are going to cut everything down the bone tax-wise, scale down bloated and inefficient city departments as far and possible, and actually remove enough red-tape so companies have incentive to open and do business. NF is a town in love with boost economy quick schemes. A failed mall downtown. A failed native american center. A failed water theme park. Aging population. Youth migration. No industrial base. Rochester, WNY, and NYS all suffer from the same backwards thinking and until they realize that continuing to grow government while shrinking the tax base is the opposite of what they should be doing. Huge public works projects won't solve the economic woes, lower taxes will. Not to say that infrastructure isn't important, but ferries I have some doubts about.
