Arkady Renko Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 See Falls, Niagara. 255559 Not really comparable since Niagara Falls was already a tourist destination. People don't usually come from miles to tour the Kodak factory.

stuckincincy Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Bringing in casinos often just hastens a city's decline IMO. Besides the social costs, there is just diminishing returns on them nowadays. There are just too many other opportunities to gamble elsewhere that I doubt a casino would bring in many tourists. So you basically just attract the people from the Rochester area, essentially praying on your own citizens. Now if more casinos in this state would mean that we got rid of the lottery I would be all for it. 255555 Yes. Indiana has casinos on the Ohio River in proximity to SW Ohio and Northern KY. They've been in operation for seven or so years. Most of the receipts are local, and so far they've pulled over 3 Billion dollars out of the area - money that would have been spent in the local economy. Gambling casinos are "negative tourism".
gantrules Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 I thought there was a police problem. Can I ask why there were three Rochester cops doing traffic control at the Eastman house yesterday at 4 PM for the Academy Awards celebration? And you call us 315ers guffaws....
Alaska Darin Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 If Casinos are the proposed answer to the tourism problem, people aren't asking the right questions.
Gavin in Va Beach Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 One of these days a city is actually going to get wise and instead of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic they are going to cut everything down the bone tax-wise, scale down bloated and inefficient city departments as far and possible, and actually remove enough red-tape so companies have incentive to open and do business. That city would soon enter a 'Golden Age'. Probably won't see it while I'm alive though...
NorCal Aaron Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 So are you disagreeing with me or agreeing with me? I am sorry if I made the wrong assumption. 255598 I agree with you. NF is a town in love with boost economy quick schemes. A failed mall downtown. A failed native american center. A failed water theme park. Aging population. Youth migration. No industrial base. The new casino is a monument in a vacant city. Local pols, NYS, and the Seneca ruling elite are the only ones getting over.
RJsackedagain Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 What is this fast ferry thing? I live in buffalo and I constantly hear about it from rochesterians. 255435 It's our version of the Titantic --- except it hasn't sunk yet in the water.

When government tries to be all things to all people, they end up not being very good at anything.

The one that is going to revitalize downtown? Performing Arts Center/MCC Downtown Campus/Underground Bus Terminal are going to build downtown.... http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/p...60328/1002/NEWS
Alaska Darin Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 It remains to be seen if those kinds of projects help disfunctional bureaucracy's overcome their obvious inadequecy. Rochester, WNY, and NYS all suffer from the same backwards thinking and until they realize that continuing to grow government while shrinking the tax base is the opposite of what they should be doing. Of course, having a populous who're too apathetic or stupid to do anything but the status quo.
stuckincincy Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Of course, having a populous who're too apathetic or stupid to do anything but the status quo. 255819 Please diagram that sentence. I didn't know "who're" was a contraction...

stuckincincy Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Pun intended! 255836 OK but what about that sentence structure?
gantrules Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 We heard there were a bunch of 315ers coming to town to see "real" stars 255752 If I laugh at that I fear I'll be damning myself.

Huge public works projects won't solve the economic woes, lower taxes will. Not to say that infrastructure isn't important, but ferries I have some doubts about. Although my sister and brother in law live up in Pittsford and go to Canada a fair bit and seemed to enjoy it.
Hull, Kent67 Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 The fast ferry is a joke, they have never been ecomonically viable anywhere they were used. waste of money.
sweet baboo Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 so what's the deal with it now anyway? so rochester owns it they freaking talk about it every night on tv and i'm just wondering if they could be any more ambiguous will they be able to transport cargo or not?
