Reed83HOF Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 its ok we don't have any other WRs. He will get all 25 targets a game. Yay Samuel! He really should though!
DDD Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Turning into a career altering injury. Sadly we'll never know how good Watkins might have been had he been able to stay healthy.
26CornerBlitz Posted January 20, 2017 Author Posted January 20, 2017 (edited) Turning into a career altering injury. Sadly we'll never know how good Watkins might have been had he been able to stay healthy. I know. If only Dez Bryant, Julio Jones, and Edelman each had been able to recover from having two of the very same procedures. It's soooooooooo sad. Edited January 20, 2017 by 26CornerBlitz
Augie Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Saw this one coming. Julio had two as did Dez. Why don't they just do the second surgery first???
26CornerBlitz Posted January 20, 2017 Author Posted January 20, 2017 Why don't they just do the second surgery first??? Damn. Now that's innovative!
Augie Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Turning into a career altering injury. Sadly we'll never know how good Watkins might have been had he been able to stay healthy. Yeah, we'll never know...until we know. He's not retiring yet, as far as I know. Damn. Now that's innovative! It just seems so obvious. I bet they're embarrassed they didn't think of it first! You're welcome.
dezertbill Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 (edited) part of this was the way the Bills doctors handled this. I can't imagine in this day and age with medicine where it is that he should be going through this again. Does the medical staff change with coaching or is that Russ Brandon's baby as well? How can you possibly think this with three other prominent NFL WRs having a 2nd procedure?
DC Tom Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Why don't they just do the second surgery first??? Because of the Shah's spleen. Duh.

Whether he makes any changes though is not yet known.
White Linen Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Because of the Shah's spleen. Duh. Shah's Spleen - didn't we interview him for OC?
Augie Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Shah's Spleen - didn't we interview him for OC? According to Vic or LaConjecture, but I think they really wanted him for QB coach.....hard to keep track. But he was sighted at Tempo according to semi-reliable sources (me).
Dr.Sack Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 He's a great talent with a lot of promise. He turns 24 in June. Keyshawn Johnson was a 24 year old rookie. I think the kid will put these injuries behind him.
BaaadThingsMan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Time to draft a WR. Highmost of em areWith all the injury madness this year, i wonder if the Bills will change drs and the strength and conditioning team?
Hapless Bills Fan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 part of this was the way the Bills doctors handled this. I can't imagine in this day and age with medicine where it is that he should be going through this again. Does the medical staff change with coaching or is that Russ Brandon's baby as well? I don't know how the Bills doctors handled this, but it's very likely it's not that simple Both Watkins surgeries have reportedly been performed by Dr Robert Anderson in Charlotte, NC. He isn't a "Bills doctor" or medical staff per se. He's nationally renowned as a foot and ankle specialist surgeon. A lot of NFL athletes fly in to Charlotte to use him. He's pretty much the go-to guy for this stuff. With a Jones fracture, as with many other medical issues, there are trade-offs and judgement calls involved. Specifically, with a Jones fracture, 75-80% of the fractures unite (heal) without surgery with immobilization (cast or walking boot). There are further refinements of the decision making - in one location, the union rate is higher, in another, the union rate is much lower and surgery is almost always done for athletes. So depending upon specifics, Sammy's decision (and/or Bills doctors recommendation) to not have surgery immediately after the end of last season when he was reported to be playing with stress fractures in his foot, could have been a perfectly reasonable judgement call. Surgery has complications, after all. The trade-off is if the surgery isn't done immediately, the chances of a second surgery being needed increase. So evidently Sammy fell into the 20-25% who suffer non-union after immobilization, surgery was done, and yeah, he needs a 2nd surgery. It's a crappy place for a fracture, similar to a broken scaphoid bone - healing is poor because the blood supply is poor. There's also a lot of ancillary treatment said to promote healing, from simple measures like no weight bearing to use of osteogenesis stimulation. Doctors differ in what they prescribe and patients differ in how well they comply. It's not unknown that some star athletes are not the most compliant patients, especially initially.
Hapless Bills Fan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 most of em are With all the injury madness this year, i wonder if the Bills will change drs and the strength and conditioning team? TBN had it that Marrone and Whaley wanted head trainer Bud Carpenter out 3 years ago. He's been here 30 years. He and 2 other guys on the staff were promoted last summer. McDermott is apparently a terror for S&C. I would think, with all the injuries, if he wants some changes he could get them. OTOH, I think the real problem may be the turf.
BaaadThingsMan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 30 years, time to retire. With Mcds own committment to fitness i'd think ge will want a good team in place going forward.

Certainly worth looking into a better option, whether for injury or maintenance reasons.
DriveFor1Outta5 Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I know. If only Dez Bryant, Julio Jones, and Edelman each had been able to recover from having two of the very same procedures. It's soooooooooo sad. This doesn't look good imo. Dez and Julio both had their surgeries performed closer together than Sammy. Dez had surgery at the beginning of a season, and again at the end. He was ready to go the next season. Julio also had his surgery separated by only a few months. Sammy is having the second surgery further after the first than those guys. The first surgery ruined this season for him. Now we are going through it again hearing that he "should be ready for training camp". It just sounds concerning. Dez and Julio only lost one season due to the two foot surgeries. If this surgery ends up like the last it could cause Sammy to lose two seasons because of the foot. That would not be good news for his career.
