McDermott hire further diminishes Whaley

Recommended Posts

I always feel like Whaley is better than he might actually be because he is so much better than the previous administration. Nix/Whaley was so much better than the Marv/Jauron era and the Donahue era (Although Wahley's recent struggles are dipping him into Donahue territory) that I think my standards are so low that someone doing a decent to below average job looks like sunshine and roses.

say what u want about Donohoe, and he made his mistakes no doubt, but he had balls and swung for the fences. He knew they needed a QB and he brought in Drew Bledsoe, big name, big production..at first.

TD was a great football man and mind who was micromanaged by the worst owner in football to the point of ruining his career.

I'm a big believe in empowerment. The best leaders don't scoop up all the power and keep it for themselves. They spread it out; they send it down.

I don't think Whaley giving some power to McDermott is a sign of his diminishment. I think it's a good sign.

Who knows talent outside the organization better than Whaley and his scouts? No one. They should be -and are - in charge of talent acquisition.

Who knows the talent on the existing roster better than the coaches? No one. The head coach should be in charge of the 53 man roster.

I'm also a big believe that Sully is negative just to be negative. Fortunately, for him, he writes for the Bills who prove him right too often. But his schtick wears thin.

TD made a couple of big blunders that cost him his job.

Keeping Bledsoe after that disastrous 2003 season.

Not resigning PW after the 2004 season.

Trading up for Losman.

However, he is probably the best GM we've had throughout the drought which isn't saying much.

McGahee!

McGahee was a big reason for their resurgence in the 2004 season. He was their offensive MVP.

After that he faded into irrelevance but he did play great for 8 games or so.

Doesn't justify waiting for a year before he played with so little long term impact.

So Sullivan is a hack, because he doesn't say anything good about anyone, TBN has an Axe to grind, being purposefully negative etc.? We (as fans) just can't take any negativity about the team and it seems those with the axe to grind are the fans who are unable to be critical of the team....

"Will McDermott function without Whaley meddling?"

"But it’s how they handle that giant step to being in charge which ultimately decides their longevity. On Friday, the Bills will introduce McDermott in a press conference, but presumably general manager Doug Whaley, he of the disastrous meeting with the media 10 days ago, will be there. Questions for him will abound.

Start with the fact he was supposed to lead the search, but on Wednesday it was made clear that owners Terry and Kim Pegula made the coaching choice.

Has Whaley’s power been curtailed given the oppressive vocal disenchantment with his performance by the media and fan base? Were the embarrassing and disloyal leaks about the imminent firing of Rex Ryan as coach, widely attributed to Whaley or his staff, sufficient for ownership to say “enough”?

What’s certain is that McDermott was one of the leading coordinator candidates for an NFL head-coaching job.

Clearly he came into his second interview knowing that Whaley was strongly rumored to have not gotten along with Buffalo’s last two head coaches, Doug Marrone and Ryan. And he undoubtedly knew the Bills’ GM was desperately trying to hold onto his control of the 53-man roster as if it was the last life jacket on a burning raft."

Are you !@#$in kidding me? Is the Buffalo media gonna hoist their pitchforks and stage another shitshow in front of the nation again? I seriously hope not, plenty of questions to be asked without being a bunch of dicks.

It is stupid and pointless to write a negative spin piece on a guy's first day on the job. It does nothing productive. Are you telling me that a piece couldn't have been written about who McDermott is and the style he will bring? All it does is incite people. It further drives a wedge between the team and the paper limiting access. It is a self serving article as all it does is show that getting clicks is more important that content.

Thanks! Much respect for the almost-great Chuck Pollock.

No respect for Lil Doug anywhere. :(

A couple things:

1.) I purposely wrote it that way; the idea wasn't to be a dick or troll or overtly negative.

2.) Honestly though, with the schit storm we went through with the leaks (insert Trump joke here), firing Rex, Lynn's presser, Whaley's Presser, the disaster that followed it, and now hiring an HC - just because we hired another HC, does not make the other issues go away. Are these not somewhat relevant questions still? As of now, nothing is known about what McDermott's vision is and how he is going to run things; at least until the presser and then still not everything will be clear, which is fine btw; just a little hard to write about. Regardless, these articles are there because the underlying questions and concerns in the FO still exist; not every article should be a lets kiss everyone's asses...

You can't hide from these questions - they are legit...

FWIW - Willis McGahee is the 41st leading rusher in NFL history between Jim Taylor (40) and Earnest Byner (42) and ahead of guys like Herschel Walker, Roger Craig, Maurice Jones-Drew, Garrison Hearst,Terrell Davis. He finished his career with 8,474 career rushing yards and 4.0 yards per carry.

Interestingly, McGahee finished with only 638 fewer career rushing yards than Marshawn Lynch and 2,388 rushing yards more than Travis Henry.

LeSean McCoy currently is in 38th place and has 480 more career rushing yards.
