FireChan Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Gotta love made up ****. What did I make up, Doc?
jms62 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 So, for example, if they could improve to "average" in points per game allowed, would that suffice? Average would be a dream.
thebandit27 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 That would have worked this year IMO (although Carpenter played a big role). it's a trick question Kirbs--they were average in points per game allowed--tied for 16th But that doesn't really mean much, since "average" in this case is across the league. If you dive into the numbers, the average number of defensive points per game allowed across the league (normalized to remove opponents' defensive and special teams TDs) was 21.164. Buffalo allowed an average of 23.063 defensive points per game in 2016, which ranked 20th. Absolutely it would've so why change anything on offense? Average would be a dream. See above.
nucci Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 For those worried about the running game if these hires are correct....anyone watch Gordon run this year? I don't see a big drop off in the running game
CountDorkula Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Absolutely it would've so why change anything on offense? Because many times this offense was garbage. Regardless of final stats. When the defense was having a rough go of it, the offense needed to string plays together and would go three and out. I can think of several games where this happened.
MAJBobby Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 well would agree we need more passing but if we're just gonna throw more and run less which results in a lower scoring offense i'm not for it. if it improves our scoring we can't complain. but to win consistently in this league you need big time defense. Not true but ok
filthymcnasty08 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 You people crack me up. "Let's get McCoy because he's a passing specialist!" Oh yea? Who is going to be throwing the ball? You don't just become a great passing team because your OC used to coach Peyton Manning. "Let's get Romo or Brees or Rivers!" Uhhh what?? I don't know if you are all delusional or if you really think that is a possibility. Romo is going to Denver and Brees and Rivers are staying where they are and will be retired in a couple years. Nobody is packing up their family to move to Buffalo because derpy mcderp on the Bills forum thinks it would be really awesome. If they break up this offense it's going to take a couple of years to get the right players and know the plays. They are already planning on having a new defense as well. This team is hitting the reset button if they replace the entire coaching staff so add season 18 to the drought if that's the case. The issue that many, including me, have with the offense is that it was not versatile (and talented enough at the QB position) to use our weapons appropriately. I am certain that Whaley sees this as well and knows the right QB can unlock it. Who wants another year to see our $$$ TE waving his hand to give him the ball 15 yards downfield. When our all-world WR SMOKES his CB and the FS is on the other side of the field, many (including me) would like a QB that at least looks his way. We have LeSean McCoy/Gillislee and some great run blocking OLmen - I trust that a professional OC can put those pieces to work and add to them. What we lose in TT's legs, we should gain in balanced passing attack. Imagine that opposing DC's have to worry where we line Sammy up and god forbid we run a slant with him, and end around, or an ODB-style crossing route. We should have a big bodied WR2 and our TE for the medium passing game and to eat up yards while defenses have to double Sammy. Turnovers will increase, maybe sacks too, but so will TD passes, passing yards gained, difficulty to defend, comeback ability, 2-minute ability and long balls. Force defenses into a Cover-2 all game to put a lid on Sammy and lets get the guys to eat up everything underneath until the safety starts to cheat. Oh, and our defense should be improved. Would be nice to think about Phil Rivers or Brees commanding the O. Realistically, lets say it's Glennon and he gives us 3750 19TD/13int. Shady gets barely 1,000 but Sammy goes for 1200 and 9tds and WR2 800/4 and clay 700/4. I would say sign me up and fix that D starting with a Safety in the 1st or 2nd round. Use the other 1st or 2nd for the WR2 spot and start developing Cardale to compete for the starting role the following year or 2. I think it's that many see potential wasted here year in/out and simply want to see what they believe our weapons can do with a competent NFL QB. IF we totally bust out, then burn it to the ground.
CountDorkula Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Tyrod does a lot for the running game. Check week 17. What different QB are we talking about? Who's available that would be an upgrade from Tyrod that is realistic? If i tell you a rookie( which I am for) you'll laugh and say thats a joke. Much like you would have said that about Dak Prescott last year. Either Mahones, Trubisky or Watson. Give it a shot.
Kirby Jackson Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 it's a trick question Kirbs--they were average in points per game allowed--tied for 16th But that doesn't really mean much, since "average" in this case is across the league. I still think that the beat the Jets if it mattered so the Bills are a playoff team!!!!!
YoloinOhio Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) For those worried about the running game if these hires are correct....anyone watch Gordon run this year? I don't see a big drop off in the running gameSD's OL had been a train wreck and finally solidified this year. Constantly had guys in and out due to injury though. Gordon had a very underrated season. My main complaint with McCoy was he would run the ball successfully all the way down the field and then throw 3-4 straight times in the red zone often unsuccessfully. He loosened up a little this season on the punting and 4th down decisions. Note that for most of this season, Tyrell Williams and Dontrell Inman were the #1 and #2 options at WR. MAJBobby Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 How about if our defense just improves to BAD... Where wre they ranked in points allowed again?
thebandit27 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Then I am sticking with my Carpenter complaint . Miami they would have would have won. I still think that the beat the Jets if it mattered so the Bills are a playoff team!!!!! Carpenter was absolutely part of the problem...can't miss the easy ones (although I do recognize that not every kicker can be Dan Bailey). I certainly won't absolve the defense--they hung the offense out to dry against Miami (twice) and the Jets (twice). I can't get too ticked about Seattle since it took two phenomenal efforts from Jimmy Graham to score.
MAJBobby Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 That would have worked this year IMO (although Carpenter played a big role). They were AVG in points allowed. Not this tire fire people wanting tk try and justify the option try ti make them out to be
CountDorkula Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Good luck with that. Your logic is Dak Prescott? No my logic is Draft a rookie, that's the only way to find a franchise QB.
xsoldier54 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Welp. He's the anti-Rex. Seems Philbinesque to me - a boring white gym socks kinda square. Hope he hires a good staff. Hey, man, I wear white socks at the gym. I resemble that remark. It's very soxist.
MAJBobby Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Tyrod does a lot for the running game. Check week 17. What different QB are we talking about? Who's available that would be an upgrade from Tyrod that is realistic? Shady McCoy 1600 yards plus with Nick Foles. Keep tryinf to tell me TT cuts Shady loose
Maury Ballstein Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) No my logic is Draft a rookie, that's the only way to find a franchise QB.No let's keep the guy who can't beat .500 teams because he can't pass and then Scott Law can tell us how great he is 39 more times. Hope it's brees per "whisper rumors". If not there are 4 qb's in the draft that will do. Edited January 11, 2017 by Ryan L Billz
Dorkington Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Don't know anything about him, but I'm already feeling a koolaid thirst. Kill me now.
YoloinOhio Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 -The threat of an effective passing game opens up the running game -the threat of an effective running QB can open up the running back lanes, too The first one is more conducive to actually winning games
