Estelle Getty
Clock management. Coaches like Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin are wizards at managing a clock. Their coaching records reflect that. For Rex Ryan it was as though the end of every half was a first time experience for him. The man had no clue on how to properly manage the game clock. I think he was just not a very bright guy in watching his get interviews. There is a difference between being personable, carrying a conversation, and being intelligent. From what I have seen in my life the trait all good coaches share is great clock management. The trait all bad coaches share is lack of clock management. It is the window into the coaching soul if you will. If I'm Doug Whaley in the interviews I crack open a bottle of red wine and start testing coaches in end of game/half clock management situations. This is also the reason Andy Reid hasn't and never will win a super bowl. Edited December 29, 2016 by Estelle Getty
MAJBobby
Clock Management is the bain of NFL HCing. They ALL get it wrong ALOT. Some are better than others though.
Miyagi-Do Karate
I would say 90% of head coaches are terrible at clock management, including a lot of great coaches. Bill cowher was, for example, one of the worst I have seen. Andy Reid is close. Yet I think most people view them as great coaches. I would not make clock management as a major criteria for a new head coach.
BillsFan130
I would say proper game planning is the number one thing. Belichick changes his game plan every week and always puts his team in the best position to win

Estelle Getty
I'm simply stating I have never seen a super bowl winning coach who doesn't know when he should and shouldn't use his timeouts. Rex was a deer in headlights anytime that kind of stuff came into play. Can anyone disagree with that?
