LabattBlue Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 the dude is being forced to play for free Careful with your choice of words. No one is being forced to do anything. To me, this is just another reason to stop watching D-1 football. I pretty much gave up watching basketball because I got sick of the "one and done" stars. Now watch this trend take off. Maybe I should just stick with non-revenue producing NCAA sports, or watch D-2 and D-3 basketball and football instead.
BringBackOrton Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 true but the universities also makes millions from these kids playing football so the free ride is nothing to these schools And McDonald's paying a wage slave 8 bucks is nothing to them either. What's your point?
DriveFor1Outta5 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 true but the universities also makes millions from these kids playing football so the free ride is nothing to these schools Lots of business also makes billions while their employees see little of that wealth. How is college football any different? It's just the way life works. They get free tuition plus room and board. Sure that isn't equal to the amount of money the institutions bring in, but since when has the amount of money an entity brings in had to impact how much they compensate? It doesn't.

So you're fine with the coaches getting millions, getting a commitment from a player and their family, leaving the second they get a better offer, leaving the players without a coach they commit to? And if that player wants to leave since the coach who recruited him left, he has to sit out a year. That seems cool to you? And will you support the family if a guy who has NFL potential blows out a knee in a bowl game? I don't love this either but millions are made off these players and they don't get a cent. People buy their jersey and they don't get a penny. You go to college to get a job to take care of your family. If you had a job offer & they wanted you to skip a final for some non important class, you'd do it too.
nuklz2594 Posted December 22, 2016 Author Posted December 22, 2016 wife and i just paid off student loans. we are in our 50's. the whining...YES...whining that a full ride scholarship is not the same as being paid in nonsense. the free room and board, free medical care.etc plus the free education...is sufficient. the entire problem and it pains me to agree with nick saban is the playoff system. some bowls that are now called unimportant/insignificant has led to this. i read somewhere that 2% of ncaa football players make the nfl. the non-important games is/will be the highlight of 98% of the other teammates. i get that the 2% are looking out for their livelihood, i don't know, i don't like it. i retired us army infantry. am disabled. perhaps i should have told them i don't feel like going back to iraq or afganistan for a second tour. just saying
plenzmd1 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 I agree 100% Yes you have the right to. It's called playing for your teammates and the school you love and bleed for. Jalen had insurance and is set for life by the way, so there goes your money argument. I find it funny that so many people think that this is the right thing to do: sit out the biggest game of your life and screw everyone else. Pussies. When GM's look at these guys, they'll know what kind of character they're getting: jay cutler types. Good luck with that. Who says they "love and bleed" for the school??? Problem is they can't leave a place even if they hate it without sitting out a year, unlike a coach...who has an actual contract guaranteed but can leave and go another institution whenever the fug he wants. Quitiing on the school he should "love and bleed for" Ridiculous! And please don't talk about insurance and people being set for life and not losing anything, cause obviuosly you have not examined the situation closely.. Going from a top five pick with close to $25 million guaranteed to a contract with with $4.5 guaranteed. So he pissed away close to $20MILIION by playing in that bowl game. Yes $20MMMMMMM. For an exhibition game that meant nothing to anyone except everyone collecting additional money....which is every one except the actual athletes themselves. You are in the playoff..play , I get it. If not, your choice. wife and i just paid off student loans. we are in our 50's. the whining...YES...whining that a full ride scholarship is not the same as being paid in nonsense. the free room and board, free medical care.etc plus the free education...is sufficient. the entire problem and it pains me to agree with nick saban is the playoff system. some bowls that are now called unimportant/insignificant has led to this. i read somewhere that 2% of ncaa football players make the nfl. the non-important games is/will be the highlight of 98% of the other teammates. i get that the 2% are looking out for their livelihood, i don't know, i don't like it. i retired us army infantry. am disabled. perhaps i should have told them i don't feel like going back to iraq or afganistan for a second tour. just saying Dude, can't thank you enough for your sacrifice for our country. But guys like you and me did not bring a penny into that university...they have a special talent that these universities want, so they can bring in MILLIONS...so they offer them something for it ala scholarships. You can argue then if the player does not think that is enough compensation, they should "take their talents" elsewhere. Problem is they cant for 3 years due to the nice cozy relationship between the NFL and NCAA..

That's why people don't see any value in it. No one ever mentions how college football scholarships likely take away scholarships from more deserving students. Many things are unjust and unfair about universities in this country. Football is the least of my concerns in that department.

Many things are unjust and unfair about universities in this country. Football is the least of my concerns in that department. Football money pays for a lot of other scholarships. Most women's sports won't exist without football or basketball. Again, there are a lot of double standards here. No one cares about hockey, baseball, or tennis players who don't even go to college and go right to the pros. Why are football and basketball players the ones who get criticized for trying to get a job and look out for their best interests? Rbs get treated like used pornstars. They should be allowed to do whatever they can to get paid.

Just because an entity makes millions off you doesn't mean you are "entitled" to anything.
nuklz2594 Posted December 22, 2016 Author Posted December 22, 2016 i get where football etc pays for other scholarships...yet tuition keeps increasing. should not have to mortgage your future for an education if you cannot get a scholarship.

Just because an entity makes millions off you doesn't mean you are "entitled" to anything. I guess it's different when you aren't the one in the position. Cam Newton or Tim Tebow don't deserve compensation when their jersey is being sold? How many rational human beings would be fine with this? Sadly, most of us are completely replaceable by our companies (I'm not but still ). You aren't the reason they make their money. But the reason Joe Mixon is still on Oklahoma is because he makes them money.

Just because an entity makes millions off you doesn't mean you are "entitled" to anything. Aint a person in here said get paid in college...(even though they should) ...the argument was about skipping an exhibition game that could wind up costing you $20M, as it did Jalen Smith...but you all think for love of the game and school they should absolutely take that risk.
C.Biscuit97 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 i get where football etc pays for other scholarships...yet tuition keeps increasing. should not have to mortgage your future for an education if you cannot get a scholarship. I Agee with this 1000% but that's a whole separate conversation. The school I attend cost $60,000 to attend now and that doesn't stop them asking for money every week. It's pathetic.

PatsFanNH Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 (edited) fournette and mccaffery have decided not to play in bowl games. i may be wrong, but when you have a full ride scholarship, isn't there a contract? is this a precedent for let's say, pensacola state, with a 3-6 record, and a guy who has nfl potential, who has a draft number, decides to shut it down? sorry for the run on sentence. I just point to that ND defender who was universally thought of as a top 5 pick last year before he blew his knee out in the bowl game causing him go in round 2 to the Cowboys costing him MILLIONS of dollars. All for a bowl game that really doesn't mean that much. (Be different of it was say the NCAA Playoffs) Edited December 22, 2016 by PatsFanNH

Maybe they'd have played if the so-called national championship was at stake, or if the profiteers opened their purses and covered them with enough insurance to indemnfy them against catastrophic financial loss such as happened to Jalen Smith.

For this you received regular pay, bonuses, clothing, food, shelter, medical care for you and your family, likely a pension, lifetime free medical care, special veteran benefits for education and home purchase, etc. Is the NCAA offering anything remotely like this to its "troops"? If not, then these kids have to make free market capitalist decisions for what is best for them, not what is best for the leeches feeding off them. As an aside, coming out of school in the 60s, with the draft in full swing, I instead chose the Marine Corps. A cousin chose the Air Force. I got to pull triggers and blow shite up, he got a college degree in computer science then made millions. I think his worst day in the service was when the AC went out on his air base. You and I share much different memories I think.
