Three stories in the Buff News today with some serious questioning of Rex Ryan and his talk. Seems like the News is getting tired of his act.

Is Shaq Lawson starting for Lorenzo Alexander this week? Nobody knows

Lawson has been rotating with Alexander – a leading Pro Bowl candidate – since returning from shoulder surgery, but Ryan didn't mention anything about a switch during his Monday or Wednesday press conference. He hadn't seemed to mention anything to Alexander, either.

The Sammy-got-stepped-on story from September seems kind of serious

The way Ryan said it – offhand at the end of a Friday scrum in boyish, gee-whiz type of way – made it seem kind of funny: A guy got stepped on, LOL, send it to America's Funniest Home Videos. But for a player still dealing with pain from an offseason foot surgery, it also seemed potentially serious.

Jay Skurski's 3 Bills thoughts: Rex Ryan edition

2. For all of Ryan's glowing support of Taylor, which included a gem Wednesday when he said "I believe that Tyrod Taylor's an outstanding quarterback," he certainly threw his quarterback under the bus Monday.

I know the News hasn't always had the greatest relationship with the team, but this seemed pretty bold all in one day.

Who cares what the media says, seriously? Watch games, find facts, draw your own conclusions. This constant need to have your "beliefs" validated or invalidated by people who no more knowledge than the average football is pathetic. The day i wake up and say to myself, "Jeez, I better see what Vic Carucci says so I can make up my mind" is the day I hope someone drags me behind the woodshed and puts me out of my delusional misery.

How could the Buffalo News dare criticize such a successful team? And the coaching and QB play, hell we are going to the playoffs next year!

In their defense, they have access and contacts which--if they're doing their jobs right--actually do provide significantly more "knowledge" as to what's going on than any of us can claim.

That said, listening to Vic on his latest podcast bash his own report about the Pegula ultimatum, acknowledge that he was bashing his own report, then make a point to declare that he still stands by his report...now that was something special.

To imply that they're building a narrative, however, that's giving them far too much credit. They're too busy to be anything but reactionary. That's why reports like these are, in fact, a useful barometer of what's happening during the non-Sunday-football hours.

They're reporting what they see/hear/feel. The accuracy of it or the reliability of their analysis can be questioned, of course. But it's what they're experiencing. Can't help but feel like there's a bit too much hit miss and by golly going on right now at some level of the organization.

Just wait until the Bills get themselves eliminated on Sunday - then it's going to get really ugly.

Asked why in two years his defense has not come anywhere close to playing at an elite level, Ryan said: "I'm not sure. At times we play pretty good, and then there are other times, mistake here or whatever, that's kind of what yesterday (was)".

I've come to the conclusions that Rex Ryan is over-hyped and over-rated and he is not the great defensive genius that many believe. Much of his previous success has been the result of work done and groundwork layed down by his predecessors, Marvin Lewis with the Ravens defense and Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini with the Jets setting up the run of consecutive AFC Championship games.

At this point Rex is employing the strategy of doing more of what isn't working until it starts to work with the Bills defense. He brought in his brother Rob who I understood was some sort of Red Zone specialist. But the Bills Red Zone defense has gotten worse. He brought in Ed Reed to coach/mentor the DBs and either Ed is not imparting his wisdom to them or the DBs are incapable of understanding and assimilating his advice into their performance on the field. These are just two examples.

They can't generate pressure and turnovers against the better teams and what I find most incredible is how wide-open opposition receivers are when watching the games. When they catch the ball I wonder when a Bills defender is going to show up on the TV screen. He took over the NFL's 4th rated defense and ran it down to 19th and 12th over two seasons.

I entered the season with an open mind about Ryan but at this point i think its an exercise in futility to believe things are going to turn around. Pegula needs to cut his losses now when the framework of a good group of players is still in place. We need a professional franchise Head Coach not some pretender showman.

No, but it will have been like 5 seasons since a coach had this much sh*t to answer for with 3 games left in the season.

In most NFL ciities that's pretty long ago.

I agree on all of this.

I hope TT turns it around but who knows. I totally want him to succeed.

I know Doug personally, and think he's doing the best job we've seen in a while for this franchise. He does care about his legacy and the team's outcome.

How I imagine your PM inbox now that you've indicated having a personal relationship with the Bills GM:

Theyre gearing up for the offseason pitchfork party that will commence in January.

They were fed up with him week one of 2015. They are betting on a Bills loss so they can go medieval on him.

How many years in a row do they have to be right before they are no longer hacks?
