The Eagles' opponents are collectively ranked first vis-a-vis other teams' opponents. The Bills offensive opponents are ranked 29th collectively. This is closer to the eyeball test. They are a bottom third defense. Some of the other rankings are definitely skewed by the quality of offenses they played......including a shutout of a thoroughly helpless Pats offense in NE.....so the 29th rank collectively makes sense. This defense has been a whopping disappointment. It's easy to blame the QB for the teams results......it's hard to resist, in fact.......but they are scoring points on offense.

Yeah, FO usually squares with reality as I perceive it.

But this is more than fine in it's own thread. Edited December 7, 2016 by #BADOL

The Offense is blamed for scoring too quickly. The offense is blamed for going 3 and out. The defense can only stop an opposing offense if it's approximately 55 degrees, with a northwest wind (as long as it's not over 8mph), and a humidity level at about 55%. We wouldn't want this Bills defense to face any kind of adversity.

And really the pats are probably not the team bringing down the opponent rank with a lot of Brady in their stats now.
bobobonators Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Defense is about as stout as paper mache.
dave mcbride Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 (edited) And really the pats are probably not the team bringing down the opponent rank with a lot of Brady in their stats now. Yeah, we forget that the Jets are actually a horrible offense (ranked 28th, and I think that's charitable) because they looked like the 1989 49ers against us. The Bills have played SF, AZ, Baltimore, Jax, and the Rams, all of which are ranked very low. A good defense would be feasting on this competition: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamoff . Also skewing the stats in the Bills favor is the departure of AJ Green in the Cincy game. No way do the Bills stop the Bengals if he's in there. He's the best receiver in the league. Fixxxer Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Schwartz's defense looked really bad against the red BB gun last week. Still a fan of his simplistic system.
bobobonators Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 (edited) In the last 3 weeks, the Bills defense is ranked second to last in the NFL in red zone defense, giving up TD's in 87.5% of the opponent's trips into our red zone. Honestly, I thought that number was going to be much closer to 100%. Somehow, we're 2-1 during that stretch. Must be the offense's fault. Edited December 7, 2016 by bobobonators
D. L. Hot-Flamethrower Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Big Cat should be here to tell us this is due to AW being out any minute now.... And because we cluster 3 and outs!
bobobonators Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 (edited) Big Cat should be here to tell us this is due to AW being out any minute now.... Kansas City is #1 during that stretch at 35.71% (a real defense). Overall, Bills are 19th in the NFL in red zone defense (TD's only). I believe we were ranked near the top in the first half of the season, and we're literally dead last in the second half of the season (over the last 6 games or so). Meanwhile, Buffalo's offense is #6 in the NFL in red zone scoring (TD only) and 9th overall in points. We must cluster our scoring. Our defense gets winded. Edited December 7, 2016 by bobobonators

I think you are just subconsciously failing to give credit to the D for the Crabtree drop. And on the matter of subconscious thought: Is it possible to subconsciously give credit to Tyrod Taylor for degree of accomplishment in making Khalil Mack look like a traffic cone on a fake and running 15 yards for a TD? One of the reasons for the fixation on obvious Tyrod shortcomings is the failure to credit the broader scope of production...........and in truth for some reason it does feel like he shouldn't get much credit for plays like that because it's not what QB's usually do..........but in reality plays like that are daggers to the opposition. The Bills defense is daggerless. They are more like a meat scabbard/dagger cushion. They simply don't make any spectacular, game changing plays and simultaneously get stabbed on the regular. Giveth and don't taketh away.
Jauronimo Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 And because we cluster 3 and outs! Heat maps!!!!
uticaclub Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 The defense isn't great by any means, but it doesn't help when after they gave up a 12 play drive for a TD, that they don't have time to catch their breathe, have a cup of water, let alone make adjustments before they are back out on the field after a 3 and out or bomb TD.

Next time Shady breaks an 80yd run we should tell him to stop short of the end zone so the defense can catch its breath. Poor guys. If they don't want to be on the field as much, they're welcome to force the opponent into a 3 and out as well.
