Sammy Watkins did not practice due to sore foot

Most players with a chronic injury are given a rest day. I believe Charles Clay and his ever chronic bad knee get off Wednesday's too. Sammy will walk through most of practice Thursday and do light reps, then perhaps on Friday run 10 or so routes at game speed and then jump on the jet to Oakland Saturday. My thinking is he will play and will take some pain meds to ensure he can play.

This kid is a china doll, he was great at Clemson in his last year. He looks bigger and it appears slower now. He exceled at screens in collage and after his first screen in the pros ended in broken ribs they have never used him in this way again.

To be fair that was a slant route, not a screen. Sammy could excel on screens, but because we run a limited offense they mainly limit his routes to stops, comebacks, hooks, and vertical go routes. Very rarely is Sammy put in motion and sent on a cross. I don't think Tyrod is allowed to throw across the middle of the field. In Rex Ryan's world more harm than good can happen. Our offense reminds me of the Mark Sanchez 2009-2010 Jets offense with a more mobile QB.

Harvin also, a headache is a poor excuse to miss a game.

So.... honest question. At what point do we say that his unavailability (!) is a problem for the team ? Perhaps he plays against the Raiders in some limited capacity. But if he continues for the rest of the season by being partly available or not available at full health, what does the team do ? We had heard about the trainers and doctors in last offseason and yet here we are.

Note that I am not accusing him of slacking off or being soft. All I am saying is that if his injuries are unlikely to have him at full strength for a season, is it worth keeping him in the hope he plays at some point of the season ? Or does the team take a long hard look at trading him in the offseason ? He is an immense talent but only when he is on the field and playing even at 80-90% strength. Not on the bench or on IR.

Just be glad he played well and finished the game against the Jags.

My initial prediction was that he'd be hurt by the 3rd snap of the game.

Being hurt now has far exceeded my initial expectations. I'll take it as a win.

Re injury was a given.

Pretty drastic overreaction at this stage. He did not miss many games in his first two seasons.

Not to mention, at this rate, Julio Jones missed about the same number of games his first 3 seasons and put up near identical stats (remainder of this season pending)

Sammy has the talent. Giving up on him would be a huge mistake.

Over reaction ? He played hurt a lot in his first two years. We already know about this season.

Again, I am NOT advocating getting rid of him. I am, as I said, asking a valid question about how much time do we give him ?

I am not comparing him to anyone else and neither am I denying that he is a fantastic talent. But just cos you brought stats up, Jones has probably 50% more yards than Watkins over the first two seasons.

Id say, as long as he plays 4-5 games next year too, give him a fat, elite WR contract based on draft status and rep. So maybe give him 6-7 years to realize his full potential?
